GFC AJACCIO rout KV PËJA in #CEVCupM opener
2019 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men

Pëja, Kosovo, November 7, 2018. On Tuesday night, French National Cup holders GFC AJACCIO stormed to a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-9, 25-6, 25-11) in their away matchup with Kosovo’s KV PËJA, which coincided with the official start of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men.

The visiting team showed their potential in the first set, conceding only nine points to the hosts, and making it clear from the very beginning that they would be playing at a much higher level than the Kosovar team. Things got only worse for KV PËJA in the second set, where Thiebault Bruckert and Dejan Radic were the standout players for GFC AJACCIO, with the hosts able to record only six points in the end.

As for the third set, the head coach of GFC AJACCIO, Frederic Ferrandez, decided to give some rest to most of his starting players, thus providing Australian Thomas Douglas-Powell with an opportunity to shine. With these changes, KV PËJA were able to collect 11 points, but this is the best they could achieve in this match.

Frederic Ferrandez, head coach of GFC AJACCIO: “This was an easy win for us as we did a great job, especially in the first and second sets. Our team will now focus on the return match in Ajaccio and after that, we will move on with our preparations for the next round where our opponent will be ISTANBUL BBSK. After that round, it will be difficult for us to achieve more, but let us hope for the best and we will take it one match at a time.”
Skender Lajqi, team captain of KV PËJA: “This was a disappointing match for the team, the fans and everyone involved. For sure, this was not our night and this performance does not reflect the real potential of the team. We had a short time to work following the arrival of Adriatik Kajtazi and Shkelqim Ismajli, and this you could see on the court tonight. Our second adventure in the European Cups will continue with the trip to Ajaccio for the second game against the French team, and let us hope we can do better there.”

In the remaining #CEVCupM matches held on Tuesday night, Poland’s Indykpol AZS OLSZTYN easily beat Hurrikaani LOIMAA of Finland 3-0 and Czech Republic’s KLADNO Volejbal cz achieved the same result on the road at Bulgaria’s MONTANA Volley.
