Russia to host 2022 FIVB Men’s World Championship!
News from the FIVB

Cancun, Mexico, November 15, 2018. The FIVB today announced that Russia will host the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.

FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça Fᵒ made the announcement in front of almost 200 National Federations at the federation’s 36th World Congress in Cancun, Mexico.

Volleyball has grown significantly in Russia in recent years, thanks partly to the great success of the Russian men’s national team. At the London 2012 Olympic Games, Russia won volleyball gold. In 2018, Russia won the inaugural Volleyball Nations League (VNL), before qualifying for the final week of the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Italy and Bulgaria.

Following the announcement, FIVB President Ary Graça said: “We are very excited to be partnering with Russia for the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship. We have no doubt that Russia will deliver a world-class event in which the FIVB will present the latest technologies and advancements in fan entertainment, showcasing state-of-the-art volleyball competitions.

“After a very competitive bid process, the FIVB unanimously concluded that Russia’s bid was the best one for the global development of Volleyball. It will allow us to inspire Volleyball to the people in Russia, the surrounding region and around the world.”

Russian Volleyball Federation President Stanislav Shevchenko said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the Russian Volleyball Federation and the Russian people to cheer on their team on home soil. We saw the excitement for Volleyball after Russia won the VNL and we are already looking forward to hosting a great event that the entire Volleyball family will enjoy!

“Our country has a great experience in hosting major sporing events – such as the Men’s Volleyball World Championship in 1952 and 1962, the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and the FIFA World Cup in 2018. The very best athletes came to the USSR, and then to Russia, to fight for the gold medals of the most prestigious competitions. And now the 2022 FIVB Men’s World Championship will become the latest addition to this series of major events. This tournament is a tribute to our fans, athletes, veterans, the leadership of the country, and all people interested in sports. There is a huge number of Volleyball fans and sports enthusiasts in our country and they deserve to see Volleyball stars from all over the world competing in a home World Championship.”

FIVB Athletes’ Commission President Gilberto Amauri de Godoy Filho, aka Giba said: “The decision to award the Men’s World Championship to Russia is another great step for the development of Volleyball. The passion of the fans is incredible – I know that from my time as a player – and Russia has shown its quality for hosting spectacular major sporting events. I played in Russia for two years and I am very happy to know that this great country is going to host the 2022 World Championship.”

Venues and dates of the tournament will be defined during the FIVB Board of Administration meeting in mid-February 2019.

The announcement for the host of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship will be made shortly.
