CEV and UEFA Presidents hold historic, high-profile meeting
News from the CEV

Portorož, Slovenia, November 23, 2018. On Friday, CEV President Aleksandar Boričić had a historic high-profile meeting with UEFA President, Mr Aleksander Čeferin, at the Sporto Conference in Slovenia and the two officials used this exclusive opportunity to discuss what their respective organisations and sports share in terms of goals and strategic vision. Both leaders highlighted the importance of having players and fans as the very core of the game and the show that goes with it.

The meeting on Friday was held between the sessions of the annual Sporto Conference, where both the CEV and UEFA Presidents, as well as the President of the Slovenian Volleyball Federation (OZS), Mr Metod Ropret addressed the attendees. With no surprise, the highest authorities in European volleyball and football agreed on the core principles of sports governance and the importance of growing the game from the grass-roots level all the way up to its elite and most prominent side.

The CEV and UEFA Presidents emphasised the need for transparency as well as the necessity to focus on the core values of sports and physical activities, thus refraining from pursuing any secret deals and holding discussions behind closed doors. These principles stand at the core of the CEV strategy and vision to develop Volleyball, as shown by the historic CEV Volleyball Champions League Forum held earlier this year in Luxembourg where all relevant stakeholders came together to exchange views, opinions and share proposals on how to best grow the most prestigious competition in club Volleyball.

The very same spirit came to the fore at the XXXIX CEV General Assembly held last week in Cancun, Mexico, where the representatives of more than 50 National Federations expressed their readiness to work closely together with all stakeholders to provide an extra boost to the development of the sport.

The notion of having players and fans at the centre of any further actions and plans was mentioned throughout the conversation, adding that the European sports model and its sustainability can only be preserved through cooperation and a strong sense of cohesion under the umbrella of the respective sports institutions and not through the plans designed by any private companies.

In order to foster and pursue good governance, only official competitions, either organised or recognised by the respective sports institutions, will be accepted, thus continuing the excellent work done so far to foster a lasting and sustainable growth of the sport at all levels.
