VakifBank and Eczacibasi VitrA start World championship with 3-0 victories
2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship

Shaoxing, China, December 4, 2018. The 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship started on a good note for both Turkish clubs as VakifBank ISTANBUL and Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL claimed 3-0 victories in their opening matches, while Volero LE CANNET lost in five sets.

The French Volero were the first from the European teams to take the stage in China as they faced Brazil’s Minas Tenis Clube in a battle that eventually lasted five sets. The French side managed to start strong by claiming the opening set, but lost their spirits in the sets to come. Led by Gergana Dimitrova, Angelina Lazarenko and Heidy Casanova they evened the score after four sets played. The Brazilians started the tie-breaker with a bang, although LE CANNET brought it to a tie at 14-14, they could not move any further as Minas claimed the set 16-14 and celebrated a victory 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 25-16, 17-25, 16-14).

When Eczacibasi stepped on court, it was no surprise they dominated with Kazakhstan’s Altay Volleyball Club on the opposite side of the net. With 19 points the Serbian opposite Tijana Boskovic was the main engine for the 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-15) victory of her team.

The reigning World champions VakifBank ISTANBUL took to the court in the last match of the night against the home team Zhejiang Volleyball Club. Their rising star, the 18-year old Turkish opposite Ebrar Karakurt was the top scorer with 17 points in what ended up to be a fast 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-13) win, allowing the team to save their strength for the battles to come.

On Wednesday, December 5, all teams play their second matches of the tournament with VakifBank meeting LE CANNET in an all-European clash, while Eczacibasi will face Thailand’s Supreme Chonburi that today started the tournament with a 0-3 loss to Praia Clube of Brazil.
