Beach Volleyball in the spotlight with annual EBVC meeting in Luxembourg
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, December 11, 2018. Winter has arrived, but it is nevertheless that time of the year where the members of the European Beach Volleyball Commission (EBVC) convene in Luxembourg for their annual plenary meeting to make plans and proposals for the season ahead. It is an exciting time for Beach Volleyball with many ideas put to the table in order to grow the sport and involve as many as possible in the game.

The EBVC reviewed where they stand with the implementation of the strategic goals and road map they set for the period 2016-2020 as well as a highly successful 2018 season, with the major highlight being the historic EuroBeachVolley held across as many as four Dutch cities.

The event held in the Netherlands broke new ground in terms of promotional activities and presentation of the sport to the public, but fans can already look forward to another major such event in August 2019 with the next edition of the European Championship hosted by the Russian Volleyball Federation in Moscow, at the iconic Luzhniki Complex.

Many of the European teams have started chasing their Olympic dream in late 2018 already – and the fulfilment of this ultimate goal goes through the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup, whose third edition will start in 2019 and eventual winners, crowned in June 2020, will qualify a spot for their nation to compete at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Moreover, it is the wish and goal of the EBVC to grow the game at all levels – and with this in mind, the discussions focussed on the necessity to bring all development activities under one umbrella in an effort to account for consistency, quality and effectiveness.

The meeting was an opportunity to review the strengths and weaknesses of the current World Tour model, especially after Europe acted as a pioneer by delivering all 1-Star events held on European soil in 2018. This trend will continue in 2019 too, when the CEV will be responsible for the organisation and delivery of 1-Star and 2-Star events due to take place in Europe.
