Denmark and Finland undefeated at #EuroVolleyU16W zonal qualifier
2019 CEV U16 Volleyball European Championship - Women

Torshavn, Faroe Islands, January 5, 2019. The two pre-favourites of the competition, Finland and Denmark got off to a flying start in the group stage of the #EuroVolleyU16W NEVZA zonal qualifier running from Friday to Sunday in the Faroe Islands. The eventual winners of the tournament held in the Faroese capital will qualify for the Final Round due to take place in July in Italy and Croatia. Fans can follow the matches through the live stream available at thanks to the truly remarkable effort made by the Faroese Volleyball Association.

As for Pool A, Finland emphatically beat Iceland in straight sets (25-11, 25-11, 25-14) in the opening game of the tournament while Denmark’s score against Ireland in the following match in Pool B was almost identical (25-11, 25-11, 25-10).

Finland showed their strength again in their second match of the day beating Sweden 25-13, 25-22 and 25-10 to take maximum points from the group stage, as did Denmark when they later beat the host nation, the Faroe Islands, 25-12, 25-15 and 25-23.

The hosting team had earlier in the day given their coach Rajco Petrovic a perfect birthday present with a 3-1 win over Ireland. The Faroese players won the first set 25-23, but lost the second 22-25. However, when the hosts settled with their nerves, they proved too strong for the Irish team and won comfortably the following two sets 25-12 and 25-15.

Like Ireland, Iceland lost both of their matches too; the second one a 0-3 defeat to Sweden, 13-25, 12-25 and 14-25.

However, there is still hope for both losers as they still qualified for the quarterfinals due to take place on Saturday. Iceland will then be up against the Faroe Islands for a place in the semi-finals while Ireland takes on Sweden. Group winners Finland and Denmark have moved straight on to the semis.

Saturday’s schedule:

Match #7   10.00 GMT QF1 Sweden vs. Ireland
Match #8   12.30 GMT QF2 Faroe Islands vs. Iceland
Match #9   15.00 GMT SF1 Denmark vs. Winner of Match#7
