Russia and Germany triumphant at an all-European podium at Dela Beach Open
2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball 4-Star DELA Beach Open - Men

The Hague, The Netherlands, January 6, 2019. Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Viacheslav Krasilnikov claimed top honours at the 4-Star World Tour Dela Beach Open by beating the young and talented Germans Julius Thole/Clemens Wickler. The bronze medals go to Ilya Leshukov/Konstantin Semenov, who shot down the last home hopes - Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen.

Oleg’s and Viacheslav’s road to Gold was an intense one as they met the current it-boys Anders Mol/Christian Sørum in the quarterfinals. Although the Norwegians have been on a gold medal streak since last July, the new Russian team showed no mercy and moved to the semifinals after a 2-0 (21-12, 21-13) win.

The first semifinal was and all-Russian affair with old teammates Krasilnikov and Semenov meeting on the opposite sides of the net. This time the luck was on Viacheslav’s side as his team was victorious with 2-0 (21-18, 21-14) and it guaranteed them their third medal in three World Tour events since the formation of the team Stoyanovskiy/Krasilnikov. And only a gold was missing to complete the set.

The gold medal match was an intriguing one as the Germans Thole/Wickler have been surprising the Beach Volleyball World with their top level performances since last summer. However, they did not manage to shine bright enough to shadow the dominance of the Russians, who went ahead and ended their journey in The Hague with another win – 2-0 (21-11, 21-18).

This time around the visit to the Netherlands was a tad more successful to Leshukov/Semenov as they ended last year’s European Championship in The Hague in a not so pleasant fourth position. They managed to come back with a bang since claiming bronze medals meant silencing the crowd of the Sportcampus Zuiderpark as they beat the top Dutch team 2-1 (21-17, 14-21, 15-12). It’s worth mentioning that the 29-year old Semenov claimed gold just two weeks ago at the Snow Volleyball European Tour, while playing in freezing temperatures in Moscow.
