End of an era! Walkenhorst retires Ludwig on the lookout for a new partner
Miscellaneous

Hamburg, Germany, January 7, 2019. As announced by the German newspaper Bild, the German super-couple Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst have already played their last match together as Kira is forced to retire after a never-ending battle with injuries. These news was later confirmed by the German Volleyball Federation. The 'Golden Girls' had planned on reuniting this winter after Ludwig’s maternity leave and Kira’s recovery from shoulder operation.

Ludwig/Walkenhorst is one of the all-time most successful and decorated teams, who managed an incredible streak – becoming German, European, Olympic, World Champions and World Tour winners in 2016 and 2017. They were unstoppable and thus everybody was on the lookout to seeing them in the sand alongside each other again.

At the end of the summer in 2017 Laura Ludwig took a break from competitions to focus on starting a family with her boyfriend and long term coach of the German national team Morph Bowes. They greeted their son Theo into this world in June 2018 and soon after Laura started getting back in shape with the clear goal - defending their titles at the World Championships 2019 on home soil in Hamburg and Olympics in Tokyo 2020. Meanwhile Kira got married with her long term girlfriend, former Volleyball player Maria Kleefisch and she gave birth to triplets in October 2018.

The team happily shared pictures of their first practice together after the long break in October 2018.

The 28-year-old Walkenhorst has not appeared on the World Tour without 32-year-old Ludwig – she has been struggling with injuries – past and present and had scheduled heading back to competitions in January to get a head-start to the Tokyo 2020 Qualification together with Ludwig. However in December she postponed the reunion on the team’s Facebook page: “I haven’t been able to train for more than 30 minutes in the last few weeks. Either I am under strain on the rib or the hip, or the shoulder. Despite all treatments, the condition hasn’t improved, which is a real mystery for all doctors and physiotherapists,” and was put on bed rest by doctor’s orders.

"Beach Volleyball is my life and I will definitely stay close to it. At this very moment there are some talks with TV stations and the first sponsors and long-term partners have already expressed their intention to start or to continue our cooperation. Moreover I wish to share the values I had as an athlete. I do believe there are many people in the business world that could benefit from my experiences. It is definitely going to be an exciting time," Walkenhorst commented on the official announcement of the German Volleyball Federation.
