The German ship continues to shake – Sude/Borger leave Laboureur team-less
News from the National federations

Luxembourg, January 10, 2019. As announced earlier this week, German Beach Volleyball superstar Kira Walkenhorst has retired from competitive sport (read the article here) and this has caused an avalanche in the German Beach Volleyball society. Today the formation of a new team was announced - Julia Sude will leave her long term partner Chantal Laboureur and team-up with her childhood friend Karla Borger. Sude/Laboureur enjoyed the sixth position of the FIVB World Tour ranking, obviously making them one of the best teams out there.

Karla Borger, who until recently was the partner of Margareta Kozuch, had to find new solutions to continue her career after the formation of the team between Kozuch and Laura Ludwig (read the article here). She did not look far as with Julia they have spent time in both sand boxes and sand courts – the two even claimed bronze medals at the 2009 U23 European Championship in Kaliningrad, Russia. Coached by Julia’s dad the goal for this team is obvious – the World Championships on home soil in Hamburg in July, 2019 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Laboureur/Sude ended the 2018 EuroBeachVolley in fifth position after claiming bronze a year prior.

The sudden twist of events have left Chantal Laboureur without a partner shortly after her 29th birthday and with the Olympics in one and a half years. As of now she does not have any thoughts on who her new partner will be: “Julia’s announcement really shook my foundations, I do not understand the reason for us splitting up, because I fully believe we had the potential to fulfil our dreams together. I have not thought, how to proceed yet, but everyone around me knows I am a fighter and I will not give up on my dream to be at the Olympics.”
