EuroVolley Men – Drawing of Lots explained
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men

Luxembourg, January 14, 2019. All Volleyball fans can start looking forward to the much-anticipated Drawing of Lots for the CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men due to take place on Wednesday, January 16 at the iconic Atomium in Brussels. The event will start at 18:30 CET, with live streaming available on EuroVolleyTV and on the official CEV EuroVolley Facebook page. The competition will feature 24 teams for the first time ever, including the four hosting countries, i.e. France, Slovenia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The remaining 20 participating teams feature eight from the final standing of the 2017 edition and 12 from the qualifiers, which concluded last week. These 24 teams will be divided into 4 pools of 6 teams.

The four hosts are placed as the head of the respective pool that they are hosting. France are hosting Pool A, Belgium Pool B, while Slovenia and the Netherlands will be playing host to the matches of Pool C and D, respectively.

The remaining 20 teams are divided into 5 cups of 4 teams following the European Ranking from September 4, 2017, i.e. from the point when they registered for participation in Europe’s premier Volleyball competition. The 5 cups look as follows:

The draw will start with the teams from Cup 1. After a team is picked, there will be a subsequent draw to determine which pool they will be placed in; next will be Cup 2, which will follow the same procedure, then Cup 3, right through until all cups have been emptied.

One clause to be looked out for is that the Gold and Silver medal winners from the last edition cannot be drawn into the same pool. These were Russia and Germany respectively.

Should Germany be drawn into the same pool as Russia is already in, another ball will be drawn to place them in a different pool. In case Germany are one of the last two teams to be drawn from Cup 2 and the pool with Russia is still vacant, Germany will be placed in the pool without Russia in it and the last team still to be drawn into the final spot.
