Draw lays out history-making EuroVolley Women
EuroVolley 2019 Women

Istanbul, Turkey, January 23, 2019. After today’s draw at the iconic Basketmakers’ Kiosk in Istanbul, right on the shores of the Bosporus, we now know who plays who in the pool stage of the CEV EuroVolley 2019 Women! The history-making tournament will run from August 23 to September 8 across four countries – Turkey, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia – in what is a truly unprecedented achievement to go with the 31st edition of the continental showpiece.

For further information, including the competition formula, visit the event website http://eurovolley.cev.eu.

“Many thanks to the Turkish Volleyball Federation for their welcome and especially to their President. They have organised many major competitions and always have done so with much success. We have experienced organisers in the other three countries as well. It is the first time we have four organisers and 24 participating teams. Moreover, I would say that this is a historic tournament and event, as it goes with the men’s championship that takes place in another four countries, and we possibly have another eight in 2021, meaning we can promote Volleyball across the whole of Europe. It is an opportunity to develop Volleyball like never before. European Volleyball has never been as strong as now, but we still need to work even harder to raise the status and international value of our sport,” CEV President Aleksandar Boričić said.

The championship will start on August 23 in four cities - Ankara, Lodz, Budapest and Bratislava and the 24 participating teams will play five matches in their respective pools, whose composition reads as follows:

The fans can already look forward to some exciting matches, especially in Pool A where co-hosts Turkey will play reigning world champions Serbia and the winners of the 2018 Golden European League, Bulgaria.

“Welcome to all of you. I would like to thank you the President of our country, Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their support in the delivery of this event. The Turkish Volleyball Federation has hosted many competitions with big success and has become an important country on the world and European Volleyball map. The year 2019 coincides with the 100th anniversary of Volleyball in Turkey. The audience in Ankara will continue to support our team and all players with much passion and I am sure we will achieve results that we will be proud of at the end of the tournament,” said the President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation, Mr Mehmet Akif Üstündag.

The 24 teams competing at EuroVolley 2019 Women include the four hosting countries, eight teams as per the final standing of the 2017 edition and 12 that booked their tickets through the qualifiers that finished earlier this month. Estonia are making their first-ever appearance in the competition – the first time the Baltic country will compete in the women’s continental showpiece in any team sport.

Many illustrious guests attended the draw, including the highest authorities in European Volleyball, representatives of the four hosting countries and their cities, as well as of the 24 participating teams. The list featured Tournament Ambassadors Neslihan Demir Güler, Edina Dobi and Adriana Marcekova and additional Volleyball legends such as Serbia’s Jelena Nikolic, a former European champion (in 2011) and silver medal winner from the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The CEV will publish the detailed match programme for the pool stage of the tournament in due course.
