Knack ROESELARE win fourth Belgian Cup in a row
News from the National Federations

Antwerp, Belgium, February 10, 2019. In front of some 10,000 spectators, Knack ROESELARE extended their winning streak in the Belgian Cup Finals to a fourth triumph in a row by posting a 3-1 victory over Lindemans AALST (18-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15).

Yet, the challengers from Aalst were not in the mood for presents in the Antwerp Sportpaleis. They came out serving very strongly, with Polish spikers Janusz Gorski (13) and Adrian Staszewski (14) as eventual top scorers, thus routing out the titleholders convincingly in the opening set (18-25).

However, Knack ROESELARE regrouped itself. “We know how to play a Cup Final, especially in these unusual circumstances,” said middle blocker Pieter Coolman. Together with top scorer Matthijs Verhanneman (24), he put the Knack-train on the rails again, crushing the opposition gradually.

“This is my sixth Belgian Cup,” Knack ROESELARE captain Hendrik Tuerlinckx (23 points) recalled. “The fourth in a row, here in this arena. I guess we are unbeatable here.”

For Knack ROESELARE, it was the 12th Belgian cup title in the club history. Eternal rival Greenyard MAASEIK is still two titles ahead with 14.

Back in the 80s, Hermes was a powerhouse and the dominant force in women’s Volleyball in Belgium. However, it took them as many as 31 years (!) to celebrate a new triumph. Former Yellow Tigers Jasmien Biebauw and Nina Coolman helped their teammates achieve a hard-fought 3-1 victory, not after underdogs Saturnus MICHELBEKE had saved four match points in a thrilling final (25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 28-26).
