IBB Polonia and Engelholm claim NEVZA Club Championships titles
News from the Zonal Associations

Copenhagen, Denmark, February 10, 2019. Clubs from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, England and Iceland fought across the weekend for the 2019 NEVZA Club Championships title, and in the end, the teams of Engelholm and IBB Polonia triumphed with the women’s and men’s titles respectively.

This year, the NEVZA Club Championships did not feature a pool stage, but instead a Final Round with two pools, semi-finals, classification and medal matches across three days.

In the women’s tournament, the final was a clash between Engelholm from Sweden and TopVolley Norway. The Swedes displayed an all-round top performance with great service, great reception, and great attacks. There were no doubts about the outcome, as Engelholm controlled the NCC-final from start to end, winning 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-16).

In the men’s tournament, a brand new champion emerged, after BK Marienlyst from Denmark faced IBB Polonia in the final. Opposite the women’s finale, the men’s was a close encounter. IBB Polonia claimed the first set 25-23, before the Danes found their A-game and won the two following sets comfortably 25-19 and 25-15. The English side, however, fought back and brought balance in the set score winning the fourth one 25-23. Therefore, a tiebreak would determine the eventual champions. IBB Polonia powered to a 15-13 win and thereby claimed the NEVZA Club Championship title for the first time ever – becoming the first team from England to achieve this feat.

“At first we did not know what to expect. The teams are significantly stronger (physically and technically) than anything we are used to in the Super League in England. We wanted to return with a medal of any colour, but we did not anticipate a gold medal! We played 19 sets over three days and four matches. Each encounter was tough with powerful players and teams that were very well drilled. There was little chance to celebrate after the win, because we had to rush to the airport to catch a flight home. On our arrival at Gatwick, we were greeted by our faithful supporters with lots of singing and applause,” commented the captain of the English team, Bartosz Kisielewicz.

“We were delighted that we could represent British Volleyball and to win such a prestigious event. This is yet more evidence that this sport has to evolve in this country. I believe this is the start of many future successes over the coming years for IBB Polonia. I would like to dedicate this victory to all those who have given so many years of their lives to develop the sport back at home,” said Club Chairman Bartek Luszcz.
