CSM Volei Alba BLAJ still hoping for a sensation despite Istanbul setback
2019 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Blaj, Romania, February 11, 2019. Trust and hope! Two words that express the expectations and feelings of CSM Volei Alba BLAJ for the second leg of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Cup quarterfinals with Galatasaray ISTANBUL. Disappointed after the outcome and performance of the away match, Europe’s 2018 vice-champions will be trying to push Tuesday’s home fixture into the Golden Set and to cause another sensation, as it happened in 2018 when the Romanian team defeated Galatasaray in the Champions League semi-finals. The result of that match, 3-1, would help Volei Alba BLAJ play the all-decisive set, and a performance that reminds of the match in Bucharest from May 2018 is on everyone’s lips. Will history repeat itself?

Conscious that in Istanbul the team did not meet the expectations, Volei Alba BLAJ officials hope that the spectators who will come to the Transylvania Hall in Sibiu will see another big match of their favourite team. Even though the chances of qualifying seem small at first glance after that 0-3 setback last week, the Romanian team did not lose confidence. Both the team captain and the head coach promise that Alba will fight until the last ball and it matters, in the Sibiu match that they can rely on the support of the fans, as it happens with every match on their own ground.

Nneka Onyejekwe, captain of CSM Volei Alba BLAJ: “There is not much to say about the match in Turkey. They had control over the entire match and we did not find our rhythm, but we know we can play much better than we did last Wednesday and hope to do that in the game on Tuesday. It is hard to play against a team that competes in one of the best national leagues in Europe, a championship where almost every match is difficult. In our case, I know it is always hard to play against the same team in such a short time. Theoretically, our chances are very small but I still believe in ourselves and hope to succeed in ‘making the impossible possible’ and if we do not, I want to get my head up on the ground knowing I played at the highest level and that I gave everything.”

Darko Zakoč, head coach of CSM Volei Alba BLAJ: “We are a little disappointed, because in Istanbul we did not play the way we wanted. We meet a valuable team, we know it will not be easy, but we have hopes that we will play much better in front of our fans. We will do everything possible to send the match to the decisive set and I believe that, with the power of our fans, we have the strength to cope with such a match. It is clear that we are not the favourites, especially after the game we played last week, but we will do everything we can to write history again for our club.”
