PERUGIA remain unbeaten in #CLVolleyM, but had to pull out all the stops to set aside CHAUMONT
2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League

Luxembourg, March 14, 2019. French hopefuls CHAUMONT VB 52 HM were close to causing a huge upset in the quarterfinals of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men. They led after three sets and also had a match point in the tiebreak. Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA (ITA) barely survived, but managed to get the all-important win in the end: 16-14.

CHAUMONT VB 52 HM (FRA) vs. Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA (ITA) 2-3 (21-25, 31-29, 25-17, 19-25, 14-16)

  • The Block Devils of Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA honoured their nickname Thursday night, scoring 18 points directly from blocking. In the fourth set they managed to score ten.
  • PERUGIA hadn't lost a match so far in the 2019 edition of the Champions League, this is the first time they had to go for a fifth set, as they won full 18 points from six group matches.
  • Top scorer for the match was Aleksandar Atanasijevic for PERUGIA, he scored 21 followed by his teammate Filippo Lanza and CHAUMONT's Julien Winkelmuller with 18.
  • 1,652 spectators witnessed CHAUMONT coming back from losing the first set to leading 2-1. They even had match point in the fifth set, but were unable to convert it.
  • Filippo Lanza was chosen as the MVP of the match.

Wilfredo Leon Venero, outside hitter for Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA: “We were waiting for a tough game, because at this level, all games are tough. CHAUMONT showed us good things, and I didn’t recognise the team who played the French Cup final. This win is important before the second game. Of course, I think about the possible semi-final against Zenit KAZAN, my former club, but before that we have to finish the job against CHAUMONT, in the second match.”

Baptiste Geiler, outside hitter for CHAUMONT VB 52 HM: “We believed in the win, it was close. Our opponents have more experience, but we must win. Details make the difference, a win in five sets may be perfect, sadly, we made too many mistakes on key points.”
