Strumica defend national cup, rising stars confirm potential ahead of EuroVolley
News from the National Federations

Skopje, F.Y.R. of Macedonia, May 2, 2019. After the “Red-and-Yellow” national team achieved a truly historic feat by qualifying for CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men back in January, the Macedonian Volleyball family has been following the results of the national team players with much attention. In the meantime, domestic competitions have confirmed that young, talented players are getting ready to follow in the footsteps of their idol, Nikola Gjorgiev.

Quite many of them participated in the final of the Macedonian Volleyball Cup 2019, wearing the jersey of Gio STRUMICA - the most successful team in the Balkan country in the last decade. In the cup final, played in front of a home crowd at the ‘Park’ sports hall, Gio STRUMICA routed the team from the University of TETOVO 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-17), thus securing the 12th national trophy for the club’s showcase.

Six of those trophies are from the home cup, and another six from the championship. Middle blocker Slave Nakov and outside hitter/opposite Stojan Iliev have confirmed their status of rising stars and trump cards that Macedonian national team head coach Nikola Matijasevic will be able to play at EuroVolley 2019. The Former Y.R. of Macedonia will be playing in Pool C in Ljubljana together with Finland, Turkey, Russia, Belarus and co-organisers Slovenia.

“The starting six of the Macedonian national team consists of international players, but the bench and especially those on the wider list are mainly from domestic clubs. The roster of champions Gio STRUMICS includes several players able to support the starting ones. One of them is the captain Vase Mihailov and there are also Nakov, who played a great cup final against the University of TETOVO, as well as Iliev,” said Trajce Atanasov, a former Macedonian Volleyball player and assistant coach in the Macedonian national team.

There is still semis and finals of the national championship to take place, and on June 2, national team coach Nikola Matijasevic will begin to assemble the mosaic for the successful debut performance of the Macedonian national team on the European stage.

In the women’s Cup final, the team of Rabotnicki SKOPJE prevailed against Nakovski Volley 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 16-25, 25-17). The game was interesting, with many young Volleyball players under the age of 25, and in this way, the idea of re-forming the Macedonian women’s national team came to the fore again.
