Hosts Germany secured four of the six wild cards for the 12th edition of the FIVB World Championships led by Rio 2016 Olympic and Vienna 2017 world champion Laura Ludwig (pictured above) and her new partner Margareta Kozuch. Ludwig will be competing in her eighth World Championship after she and Kira Walkenhorst captured the 2017 title in Vienna by defeating Americans Lauren Fendrick and April Ross in the three-set finale.

Leonie Körtzinger and Sarah Schneider also secured a wild card berth to give the host country six women’s teams in the 2019 FIVB World Championships. Other teams from Germany in the Hamburg event will be Sandra Ittlinger/Chantal Laboureur, Karla Borger/Julia Sude, Victoria Bieneck/Isabel Schneider and Kim Behrens/Cinja Tillmann.

Walsh Jennings will be competing in her seventh FIVB World Championships as the four-time Olympic medal winner and three-time Olympic champion captured three world titles with Misty May-Treanor at the Rio de Janeiro 2003, Berlin 2005 and Gstaad 2007 events before placing second in the 2011 edition in Rome. Walsh Jennings missed Vienna 2017 due to a shoulder injury two weeks before the Austrian event.

Alex Ranghieri and Marco Caminati will be the second Italian team in the men's competition next to Nicolai/Lupo.

Germany will have four men’s teams participating in the 2019 FIVB World Championships as Philipp Arne Bergmann/Yannick Harms and Alexander Walkenhorst/Sven Winter received wild cards along with Italians Marco Caminati/Alex Ranghieri. Other German men’s pairs in the competition will be Julius Thole/Clemens Wickler and Nils Ehlers/Lars Flüggen. Caminati/Ranghieri join three-time European champions Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo to expand the Italian contingent for the global showpiece.
The FIVB had announced last week the entrants from the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour along with the teams earning berths via the continental pathways from the Asian, African, European, South American and NORCECA confederations.

With the wild card announcement completing the 48-team fields for the men’s and women’s competition, host Germany will have the most entrants in the 2019 FIVB World Championships with 10 pairs (six women and four men) followed by the United States with nine (five women and four men) and Brazil (four women and four men).
