Lube win Italian championship four days ahead of #SuperFinalsBerlin
News from the National Federations

Perugia, Italy, May 15, 2019. After a nail-biting final series in the Italian championship, Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA edged their arch-rivals Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA in a five set battle in the fifth and final match. After losing the first two sets Lube managed a miraculous comeback, ensuring they go into the Champions League Super Finals in Berlin on Saturday in the best mood possible. Osmany Juantorena was named the MVP.

After the first two sets everything seemed to be settled for Perugia - as previously all matches ended rather one-sided. This time around, the match lived up to the highest standards by keeping spectators on the edge of their seats. The third set came as a surprise as the guests shocked their opponents by winning 25-12, in the fourth set the game evened out, but lastly the Champions League Super Finalists left no chances and took the match, the series and the cup with a 3-2 victory (22-25, 21-25, 25-12, 25-21, 15-10).

The best scorer of the final was Wilfredo Leon, who gathered 20 points for PERUGIA, while for the champions Tsvetan Sokolov managed to rack up 19, Osmany Juantorena and Robertlandy Simon both put 16 to their name.

“It is an amazing thing and I can barely find the words to describe my feelings,” Juantorena said. “I think that while we were trailing 0-2, the whole of Italy thought that the match was over but we came back playing with our heart and did something incredible winning here in Perugia. I would like to congratulate the club because after losing many finals, nightmares may be haunting you. Congratulations to PERUGIA as well, but we are the champions!”

The celebrations cannot last too long as already on Thursday the newly crowned champions are bound to travel to Berlin for the first-ever Champions League Super Finals, where they will play Zenit KAZAN in what will be a re-match of last year's final - a five-setter eventually claimed by the Russian side.

The men's final will start at 19:00 CEST and will be streamed live on EuroVolley.TV.
