Team Switzerland’s head coach Timo Lippuner looks forward to EuroVolley
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Women

Bern, Switzerland, June 4, 2019. Since 2007, Timo Lippuner has been working with the Swiss women’s senior Volleyball national team: first, as an assistant coach and since 2014 as head coach. After a long season with the Rote Raben VILSBIBURG in the German Bundesliga, he is now ready for the European Championship campaign, which started with the Montreux Volley Masters back in May.

Up until recently, you coached the Rote Raben VILSBIBURG in the playoffs of the Bundesliga and finished the season in fifth place. Now your focus is set on the Swiss national team and the journey to EuroVolley 2019 in Bratislava. How did you prepare the team for the first competition, the Montreux Volley Masters?

As the Swiss national league finished just a couple of days prior to the tournament, we treated the players to a short break before we started practicing on May 5.

What were your goals?

Like every year, our main goal was to learn a lot from the international teams, but also to show ourselves to the Swiss public. Above all, we aimed at selling ourselves as good as possible and giving new players the unique opportunity to play against some of the top teams that meet in Montreux.

How important are such high-quality tournaments for a young team like the Swiss to continue with their progress?

They are extremely important – also to broaden the horizon, especially for us in Switzerland. For many players, the Swiss national league is the “highest of highs” when they start at a very early age in a team of the top league in Switzerland. Being a member of the Swiss national team, they get the opportunity to play against teams that outperform us by four, five or even more leagues – an opportunity, which is impossible in the Swiss national league. Even though, I must say, the league provides a good level of quality having in mind the size of Switzerland. I hope, therefore, that these experiences will motivate the players to invest even more in their sport in order to get better.

What are the next steps after the Montreux Volley Masters?

In June, we prepare ourselves for the Universiade that will take place in Naples in July. The actual preparation for the European Championship will start right after this tournament, at the beginning of August. In addition to the training sessions, we have organised friendly matches against a number of national teams.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much are you looking forward to the EuroVolley 2019?
