Trinidad and Villena – The key ‘connection’ of the Red Lynxes
News from the National Federations

Madrid, Spain, June 14, 2019. Two important pieces in any Volleyball team are the setter and the opposite. If the two have been playing together since 2008, when they joined forces in the Andalusian team for the Spanish Regional Championship, and they maintain a long relationship of friendship, the Red Lynxes have a great and important asset. Ángel Trinidad and Andrés Villena are the ‘gems’ of the golden generation of Spanish Volleyball.

They finished in second place at the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ Youth World Championship in 2011 and second at the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship in Poland as well. These are great results and both players chiefly contributed to their achievement. They are now contesting the European Golden League and in preparation for their second appearance in a row at #EuroVolleyM.

“We still have many weeks to prepare for EuroVolley, and we are now focusing on the European League,” pointed out the setter to remember that the tournament of 2017 in Poland was “a first experience, which beyond the results was a quite positive one. The level and experience of the rivals was not what we were used to, and we hope that this year we can improve, compete and that the balance will be more positive in the end.”

Both have finished the season by winning their respective national leagues. Angel Trinidad was champion of France with TOURS VB, while Andrés Villena became champion of the Superliga Masculina with CV TERUEL, being MVP of the finals.

“The European Championship is going to help us grow as players and as a team. This tournament is a new opportunity for us to evolve. The experience of the previous year helps us to be prepared and aspire to make it to the knockout phase,” said Andrés Villena.

So many years together have resulted in a relationship of friendship that continues off the court. “With Andrés not much has changed in all these years. Even if we do not see each other for a long time, with a week of reunion, we are back together. We have been playing together since 2008 in the Andalusian Team, and from then to now.”

Andrés Villena and Ángel Trinidad shared two special moments earlier in their careers: the second place at age group World and European Championships in 2011 and 2012. With that experience, they are both an authoritative voice to deliver the message of the needs of the Red Lynxes to repeat past successes. “Mainly, we need a little more experience. The other teams have had another type of pressure and we are able to play at a high level, but we lack some experience and consistency,” pointed out the setter.

“If it is not this year, it will be soon. The Red Lynxes will take a step forward. As juniors, we had good competitions but in the senior ranks, we are still growing and I hope that we can repeat those good results,” Villena concluded.
