Serbia poised to secure further success at #EuroVolleyM
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men

Belgrade, Serbia, June 20, 2019. The men’s senior national team of Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro) have featured in 26 editions of the European Championship – out of 30 held this far since 1948. Serbia did not participate only in 1948, 1950, 1983, and 1993. The national team of Serbia have an impressive record of 11 medals this far, including two gold (2001 and 2011), one silver (1997) and eight bronze (1975, 1979, 1995, 1999, 2005, 2007, 2013 and 2017). Serbia have played 190 matches at the European Championship, recording 105 wins and 85 losses in the process.

As many as 134 players have played for Serbia at the European Championship. Andrija Gerić and Nikola Grbić are record holders with 8 appearances at the European Championship and with 54 matches apiece. Slobodan Boškan, Goran Vujević, Ivan Miljković and Dragan Stanković participated at seven editions of the continental showpiece event, while Vladimir Grbić and Marko Podraščanin have featured at six tournaments. Željko Tanasković, Djula Mešter, Nikola Kovačević, Saša Starović and Nikola Rosić have all competed at EuroVolley as many as five times.

Two years ago, Serbia were the eventual EuroVolley bronze medal winners in Krakow.

“It is very hard to think now about the European Championship because we still have three months until the start of the competition and currently we are playing the Volleyball Nations League. Moreover, we have an Olympic qualifying tournament before EuroVolley comes. We have to see what roster we will have then, hopefully without any injured players,” said Serbia head coach Nikola Grbić. “I hope that we will manage to preserve a good atmosphere in the team and to be fit and ready for EuroVolley.”

Serbia will start their journey in Pool B in Belgium. They have played with 28 different national teams at the European Championship this far. The most matches Serbia have played against France and Russia (19 each), Italy and Bulgaria (17 each). Out of the five rivals that they will play for the pool due to take place in Brussels and Antwerp, Serbia have played Germany seven times at the European Championship, with a win-loss record standing at 4-3 this far. Serbia’s win-loss record at EuroVolley with the remaining teams from Pool B reads as follows: Belgium (4-2), Austria (5-0), Spain (4-1) and Slovakia (3-0).
