‘Group of death’ featuring teams from Italy, Netherlands and Austria at EuroBeachVolley
CEV EuroBeachVolley 2019

Moscow, Russia, June 19, 2019. A star-studded Pool E featuring former European and world champions is the main ‘attraction’ of the EuroBeachVolley 2019 group stage emerging from the Drawing of Lots held earlier today at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Moscow. Three-time European champions Paolo Nicolai/Daniele Lupo of Italy will be playing 2013 world champions Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen (NED) in the pool as well as Austria’s Clemens Doppler/Alexander Horst, another tandem with a truly impressive resume.

Norway’s ‘hit boys’ Anders Berntsen Mol/Christian Sandlie Sørum will start their attempt at securing back-to-back European titles contesting a pool that features teams from Latvia, Russia and Austria. Home stars Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy, who attended the DOL ceremony in Moscow, will carry the hopes of the host country to claim a European title that has so far eluded Russian teams – since the establishment of the continental showpiece event back in 1993. They play opponents from Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany in a pool that is likely to deliver some exciting matches early in the tournament already.

Russia have as many as six teams in the men’s competition and after finishing fourth last year in The Hague, Konstantin Semenov and Ilya Leshukov will be trying to make it to the podium on home sand. Among their opponents in Pool C, they have Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins, one of the most decorated teams of the past decade and the 2015 European champions. Among those to watch closely are Spain’s Pablo Herrera/Adrian Gavira and Poland’s Bartosz Losiak/Piotr Kantor, with the Poles due to play one of this season’s sensations, Czechs Ondrej Perusic/David Schweiner, in Pool G.

The event in the Russian capital runs from August 5-11 at a purpose-built venue right next to the iconic Luzhniki Stadium. Back in 2005, the only time EuroBeachVolley took place in Moscow, Pablo Herrera claimed the first of his two European titles, doing so with former partner Raul Mesa. Herrera returns to Moscow for another European championship some 14 years later, hoping to add a fifth continental medal to his collection to go with gold in 2005 and 2013, and bronze in 2009 and 2018.
