CEV announces CEV Champions League Volley 2020 team line-up
CEV Champions League Volley 2020

Luxembourg, June 24, 2019. The 2020 edition of the CEV Champions League Volley will feature 28 men’s and 25 women’s teams, all due to vie for the most coveted title in European Volleyball. The format does not change compared to last season, meaning that 18 teams from the top countries from the latest CEV Champions League Volley ranking list start their campaign from the 4th Round and all remaining ones will contest the early rounds to secure one of the two remaining slots at stake for the group phase. After completion of the 4th Round, eight teams per gender will progress to the quarterfinals and continue there their quest for a spot in the Super Finals due to take place in mid-May 2020. The Drawing of Lots for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rounds will be taking place this Wednesday, June 26 at 13:00 CEST.

MEN

With the CEV Champions League Volley open to all national champions, some teams and, in some cases, even countries will be making their historic debut in the competition. These include England’s IBB Polonia LONDON and Portugal’s Benfica LISBOA – England never had a club competing in the Champions League before, while Portugal’s latest appearance dates back to the 2008-2009 season, courtesy of VITORIA SC. Romania’s C.S. Arcada GALATI will celebrate their CL premiere as well, as do Montenegro’s OK BUDVA.

Among the teams seeded to the 4th Round, the #CLVolleyM rookies are Russia’s sensation and reigning national champions Kuzbass KEMEROVO and Fakel NOVY URENGOY; ONICO WARSZAWA of Poland will be making their CL debut too after finishing second in the last edition of the PlusLiga.

Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA and Zenit KAZAN, who contested the history-making Super Finals in Berlin back in May, are among the participants as Italy, Russia and Poland have each three teams seeded to the 4th Round as teams from 19 countries participate in Europe’s elite competition.

WOMEN

With Mladost ZAGREB returning to play Champions League for the first time since the 2006/2007 season, Partizani TIRANA of Albania and Hungary’s Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST will be making their first historic appearance in the competition. Another newcomer is Russia’s Lokomotiv KALININGRAD REGION, after they finished as runners-up in the last edition of the Russian national league.

Turkey, Italy and Russia have three teams apiece due to begin their journey in the 4th Round. The 2019 gold and silver medal winners, Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA and A. Carraro Imoco CONEGLIANO, are back chasing more glory for Italian Volleyball after they played the Super Final in Berlin a little more than a month ago.

Teams from 17 countries are entering the competition, with 18 seeded to the 4th Round as per the latest CEV Champions League Ranking List.
