Derby of the Low Countries in run up to #EuroVolleyM
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men

Utrecht, Netherlands, July 11, 2019. In less than a month the two nations known as the ‘Low Countries’, the Netherlands and Belgium, will face off in the Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament (IOQT) in Rotterdam. These two organising countries of #EuroVolleyM 2019 have a long history of matches played against each other, and on Saturday, August 10, they will meet for the 141st time. The Netherlands lead Belgium by nine wins in their head-to-heads.

The first official match dates back to September 25, 1948 during the European Championship held in Rome, Italy, when Belgium beat the Netherlands 3-0. In the following years, Belgium were regularly the better team. The first win for the ‘Oranjes’ came in 1952 only, when the Dutch eventually prevailed in a five-set-match in The Hague, after being down 0-2.

Over the years, the two teams have met 140 times in friendly and competition matches. The Dutch have scored 74 victories, while the Red Dragons have emerged victorious 65 times. One time a practice match ended in a 2-2 draw. The last two meetings resulted in a Belgian win. During #EuroVolleyM 2017, in the pool phase, the ‘Lange Mannen’ failed to win a set. In preparation of the 2018 FIVB World Championship held in Italy and Bulgaria, the two countries played a close tiebreak match (see picture, courtesy of Chris Overkleeft), Belgium winning 15-11 in the fifth set.

The allocation of teams for the Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournaments put both neighbours together in Pool B, together with world no. 2 the United States and South Korea. The IOQT will be taking place at Ahoy sports hall in Rotterdam from August 9-11. This venue also functions as host of the first four days of EuroVolley competition in the Netherlands. From 13 to 16 September, the first nine matches of Pool D will be taking place there featuring the national teams of Poland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ukraine, Montenegro and the Netherlands. Be sure to buy your tickets here.
