North Macedonia’s players excited ahead of historic EuroVolley debut
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men

Skopje, North Macedonia, July 15, 2019. Usually, when people take on a new challenge, there is a strong motivation and a sense of insecurity at the same time. If this particular challenge is on a new, still unknown level, the feelings are more intense and more mixed. North Macedonia’s Volleyball players left this kind of impression when coming together for the beginning of their preparations for EuroVolley 2019. They are exploring an unknown territory, even though some have plenty of experience from their clubs. On the other hand, such a situation is the source of great motivation.

“We have played three finals in the CEV European League and we were semi-finalists twice. However, this is something different. We all say that we have accomplished the biggest goal and now we do not want to stop here,” said the captain Nikola Gjorgiev (pictured) who is the clear leader of the Red-and-Yellows.

The Macedonian national team started their training process in the sports complex “Bistra” in Mavrovo, which offers excellent conditions, and is regionally known as a winter sports centre. The players will spend 30 days at a high altitude location on Mount Bistra in the north-western part of the Balkan country, with the intent to focus fully on Volleyball.

“Although the basic idea is to make progress with our game, I cannot say that we are not thinking about the opponents. The group in Ljubljana is strong, but we have qualified for the CEV EuroVolley 2019 and now we have to give everything we have not to be secondary actors,” captain Gjorgiev is constantly trying to impose a winning stance on his colleagues.

“Guys, I will go to France in September anyway, but now I have the desire to go there with you,” said head coach Nikola Matijasevic in his first speech in Mavrovo. He has been living and working in France for many years, and his undisguised desire is to lead the Macedonian national team in the second phase of the championship.

To tell the truth, once the national team qualified, ambitions grew for one extent. In order to live up to such expectations, 15 Volleyball players need to reach the top level physically, tactically and psychologically. Therefore, French fitness coach Raynald Choquet will work with them, and an extra member of the coaching staff is the Serbian Ratko Pavlicevic.

Finland, Turkey, Russia, Belarus and Slovenia are strong and will be favourites against the national team of North Macedonia, which on September 12 will step on the prestigious EuroVolley stage for the first time in their history.
