Team Montenegro speed up preparations for historic EuroVolley appearance
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men

Pljevlja, Montenegro, August 1, 2019. The national team of Montenegro started their preparations for EuroVolley on Sunday, July 28, in Pljevlja. Thursday was the first day when there was no morning training scheduled, but there was time to hold a press conference to discuss feelings and expectations ahead of the historic event.

“We started with our work in Pljevlja and there will be three stages of our EuroVolley preparations,” said head coach Veljko Bašić, “the first in Pljevlja, the second in Bijelo Polje, and the third in Podgorica. This is where we will welcome the Greek national team, with whom we will play two friendly games, and of course Igor Kolakovic, who comes with the Iran national team. We will play two games against them, and I hope that maybe we will have a joint training session as well. In the first part of the preparation, we have 15 players, and for Bijelo Polje that number we will reduce to 14. These are those to go to EuroVolley if there is no injury or illness. For now, the preparations are running smoothly. Considering that the team is participating in the EuroVolley for the first time and that it is part of a strategy and programme that started two years ago, of course the players' motivation is extraordinary,” Bašić said.

Captain Vojin Ćaćić emphasised the great atmosphere in the group. “I would like to see that everything goes well, that there is no injury, even though we have a top medical team behind us, who takes care that everything is ok. We will have a very difficult time in the next month and a half, with extremely hard work. We cannot wait for the friendly games. I think we have nothing to lose at EuroVolley. We already achieved a great success by qualifying, so there is no pressure. In those circumstances, we have always delivered our best games. I hope it will be the same this time. We go there to show what we have achieved and done through this month and a half in preparation, to show what we can do, and I hope that we will achieve a good result,” said Ćaćić.

Playing at EuroVolley fulfilled the ultimate dream of Miloš Ćulafić, but also of all generations of Montenegrin Volleyball players. “I think it was a dream of all of us to get into a big competition, and EuroVolley is the most realistic for us. I am pleased and delighted to have the opportunity to play at this great competition. We are all very motivated and we all look forward to EuroVolley. We work hard, but it is no problem for us because we know why we are doing it. We have made a historic step by qualifying for EuroVolley, but I think we can go a step further. We all want to present ourselves in the best possible light and to make it through the pool phase. We will fight for it. We are rookies at EuroVolley and we go to play the best we can. I think we have the quality to go through to the second round. We will look for a chance against the Czech Republic, Estonia and Ukraine, and of course, we will not give up against the Netherlands and Poland. With our best game we can achieve a good result,” said Milos Ćulafić, one of the best and most experienced players of Montenegro.

The first phase of preparations in Pljevlja ends on August 9, when the national team moves to Bijelo Polje and stays there until August 24. The final stage of preparations will be taking place at Verde complex in Podgorica, where Montenegro will play the much-anticipated friendly matches with Greece and Iran.
