Team Portugal poised to live the EuroVolley dream
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Women

Porto, Portugal, August 2, 2019. Last summer the Portuguese women’s national team returned home from Holte, Denmark, with an important comprehensive 3-0 victory to secure their first EuroVolley participation in history.

Now, a few weeks before action begins at the CEV EuroVolley 2019 Women, where they will fulfil the dream of multiple generations of players, the national team is working hard, remaining focussed on what lies ahead.

“I believe that it was the first EuroVolley qualification of many more to come,” says Vanessa Rodrigues. “The ride to achieve it will always be difficult, but only this way we can enjoy the maximum of our achievements and make history. The starting players are the same as those who achieved this historic qualification last year, but we have a lot of young blood that has increased our quality. We are in the restricted group of the European elite and we are going to face our opponents the same way.”

“We have already made the most important step,” continues Marta Hurst. “It was the support not only from the Federation, but also from the athletes that were called on the last few years, and of course a lot of work, sacrifice, team spirit and dedication. This accomplishment is a major thing for women’s Volleyball in Portugal. I hope for the same support in the future.”

“We should always appreciate our achievements, little or big they are,” adds Joana Resende. “In fact, the results have shown an evolution and they only happened due to a lot of work and persistence. It is necessary that we keep working, more and better, so these results keep showing and then become some sort of a habit. Our mentality has to encourage evolution all the time and we have to be always ambitious and always want more. We have our value and the ability to work hard, so I believe we can feature consistently in the final stages of European and global competitions.”

Vanessa Rodrigues and Joana Resende cannot wait for EuroVolley to come.

Paula Semedo, who previously pursued the Olympic dream as a player, has enjoyed following this journey as she works as Portugal’s team manager. “This qualification for EuroVolley represents the culmination of all the work we have done with the national team, combined with the efforts and dedication of all the athletes and staff involved. It was a special moment to live the much-desired qualification last year in Denmark. I shed tears of emotion and happiness with all the team! Now, from the bottom of my heart, I wish good luck and enjoy the moment! We are all cheering, as always, for our national team,” Semedo said.

Juliana Antunes was part of the national team during the qualification for EuroVolley, is a three-time national champion in Volleyball and currently fighting for the same achievement in Beach Volleyball. “It is difficult to put into words what it feels to live such a moment. It was the result of a lot of work, sacrifice and overcoming challenges along the way. It resulted in an explosion of feelings that have not calmed down yet, because we really made history for our Volleyball family. We have to be humble to realise that we are probably not the top team out there, but we can play our game and should take it one match at a time. I want to thank all those who followed us in this journey and ask that they continue to support our national team because, without a doubt, they are an extra reason of our success. Thank you for always being there and never giving up!”
