Obituary – Israeli Volleyball legend David Bar Netzer (74)
News from the National Federations

Tel Aviv, Israel, August 11, 2019. Israeli Volleyball legend David Bar Netzer, widely considered to be the greatest Israeli player of all times, passed away yesterday in Los Angeles, where he had lived for the last few decades, at the age of 74.

Alongside Giora Halperin, Amiram Shafran, Ehud Dekel, Eliezer Kagan and Avishay Karpovski, Bar Netzer was part of the legendary Hapoel HaMaapil team, which ruled the local Volleyball scene in the 1960s and claimed nine straight championship titles between 1963 and 1971. Later on, Bar Netzer moved to Ein HaMifratz, HaMaapil’s rival, and won the title with that club as well.

Bar Netzer was also a part of an historic transition in Israeli Volleyball: after years ruled by teams from the Kibbutz (collective community villages), Bar Netzer steered Maccabi TEL AVIV, a team from a municipality, to its first championship title, after joining the club when it was in the 3rd division. By doing so, Bar Netzer helped push the major cities onto the central stage of Israeli Volleyball.

Bar Netzer – who was the uncle of Zohar (former coach of the Israeli national team), Yaniv and Ziv Bar Netzer, all of them well known Volleyball figures in Israel – was also a part of Israel’s national team for a long time, collecting as many as 119 caps.
