52,400 fans attend EuroVolley Women matches as huge Volleyball party unfolds
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Women

Luxembourg, August 25, 2019. After months of hard work and waiting, the much-anticipated and history-making CEV EuroVolley 2019 Women started with a ‘bang’, with as many as 52,400 fans following the matches contested on Friday and Saturday across the four venues of the tournament – Ankara, Lodz, Budapest and Bratislava. This figure speaks for itself and reflects the huge interest around the continental showpiece event that is taking place in four countries and features 24 national teams for the first time in history.

Saturday’s match between co-hosts Poland and rookies Portugal at the iconic Atlas Arena in Lodz has accounted for the highest record of attendance this far – with 7,830 fans rooting for Poland as the home side registered their second straight victory in the competition.

There was a huge crowd on Saturday night in Ankara as well, where 7,340 supporters came together for the matchup where Turkey had to fight hard to secure a 3-2 victory over Finland, a side making their first EuroVolley appearance since 1989.

If people may already know Turkey and Poland as ‘Volleyball countries’ where large crowds have become some sort of a habit, the figures registered in Budapest and Bratislava are not less impressive.

On Friday and Saturday, the Ondrej Nepela Ice Arena in the Slovakian capital hosted more than 4,000 fans for the matches of the home team – an all-time record for women’s Volleyball in the country. Moreover, as many as 3,000 spectators followed Saturday’s ‘derby’ between Hungary and Romania at Papp Laszlo Sports Arena in Budapest, a testament to the enthusiasm that EuroVolley has arisen in Hungary, where a tournament of this calibre and magnitude is taking place for the first time.

You can be sure that this is only the beginning of a huge Volleyball party that will be reaching its climax on September 8 when the new ‘Queens of European Volleyball’ will be lifting the glittering golden trophy specifically designed for the event in Turkey’s capital.
