MEVZA League opening weekend just one month away
News from the Zonal Associations

Vienna, Austria, September 9, 2019. Volleyball fans can look forward to an exciting edition of the MEVZA League that will feature eight men’s and seven women’s elite teams representing four countries. The men’s kick-off will be taking place on October 4-7 while the women’s season opener is due to follow a week later, October 11-13. Clubs from the Volleyball Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be participating for the first time: ZOK Bimal-Jedinstvo BRČKO, UOK Banjaluka Voley BANJA LUKA (women) and Mladost BRČKO (men) are all going to make their debuts in the MEVZA League.

The women’s and men’s teams initially compete in a double round robin format. After the main rounds, the MEVZA League reaches its climax with the Final Four tournaments in February and March (hosts will be announced in late October).

In the previous men’s edition, the Finals took place in Bleiburg at a sold-out JUFA Arena! Approximately 1,200 spectators experienced an impressive victory of ACH Volley LJUBLJANA (pictured) against hosts SK Zadruga AICH/DOB. Slovenia’s multiple champions clinched the MEVZA League trophy for the ninth time. The titleholders as well as Austria’s dominant squad in recent years are likely to play a key role in the upcoming season as well, but their six challengers from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria are going to put up a fight, that is for sure!

Women’s 2019 champions VK UP OLOMOUC from Czech Republic decided not to compete in the MEVZA League this season. Therefore, the way is clear for the representatives of Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The line-up of participants includes, amongst others, four-time winners and multiple runners-up Nova KBM Branik MARIBOR and two-time champions Calcit Volley KAMNIK.

While the teams are working hard in their preparations to get in the best possible shape, fans can already start looking forward to another thrilling MEVZA League season!
