Team Portugal with high ambitions for upcoming EuroVolley Men
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men

Porto, Portugal, September 10, 2019. After a short camp in the Czech Republic, which included two friendly matches, Team Portugal travelled on Tuesday to Montpellier, where they will start their journey at EuroVolley 2019 Men in Pool A along with the teams of France, Italy, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania. It is Portugal’s first appearance in the competition since 2011.

“What we achieved was achieved with a lot of sacrifice; these players fought hard, and we do not want to step back. We want to continue to make history and move on to the next round. We will do our best to leave a good image of Portugal at EuroVolley,” says head coach Hugo Silva.

“Italy, Bulgaria and France are three teams that after the VNL competed in the Olympic qualifying tournaments. In addition to their value, these teams have the huge advantage that they are at a maximum pace and excellence in their preparation. Greece and Romania are teams that have made a very quiet qualifying stage and at the same time with very high quality. I would say they are teams more of our level. Let us bet everything on these last two matches, believing that we will be closer to what we want,” he continues. “If we do not qualify for the next stage, it will not be a good EuroVolley for us, even if it is a final round. What we have done in recent years, especially in the more recent ones, compels us to assume that we have what it takes to move to the next phase.”

It will be Portugal’s fifth participation in a final round of the European Championship, after previously doing so in the 1948, 1951, 2005 and 2011 editions of the continental showpiece event.
