Team Poland acknowledge expectations inevitably high for EuroVolley
CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men

Belchatow, Poland, September 11, 2019. “Since last year we claimed gold from the World Championship, we feel the obligation to fight for the highest goals,” says Michał Mieszko Gogol, PGE Skra head coach, who also is the assistant coach of the Polish national team. On Friday, the White-and-Reds will start their quest for yet another accolade at EuroVolley Men with the Pool D matches in the Netherlands.

Poland are going to EuroVolley after qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and this was the main goal for this season. So what is the goal of the Polish national team at EuroVolley?

All of the top teams will be willing to show their best in this competition and come back home with a medal. In addition to that, after taking gold at last year’s World Championship, we somehow feel the obligation to fight for the highest goals. As a team, the players are in good shape and therefore we want to play for the medals. Of course, we first have to make it among the top four, and then we will think about what to do next. This is our way for this tournament.

Will there be less pressure than during the Olympic qualifier in Gdansk?

I think the Olympic qualifying tournament was a lot more a subject to talk about than the European Championship. The second thing is that EuroVolley has a little ‘escaped’ the media attention this far, but still people will expect from us the best performance and a medal. That is why we want to go as far as possible and get what we can.

Group matches should not be too much of a problem for Poland.

The formula of the European Championship is that we have as many as 24 teams in the tournament and these are quite many. We need to win our group matches, but we can also rotate the squad to prepare well for the next round. Things should be working this way for us.

Referring to PGE Skra, there will be three players and three staff members at EuroVolley.

This is a unique year for National Team competitions, because there are many events and matches. It is one of the most crowded calendars in recent years and we are already feeling tired. Let us remember that there are still two events to be played, EuroVolley and the World Cup, and it is still mid-September. There is still much to play for and it is hard to manage your strength. However, the coach Vital Heynen has a plan and this will not change until the end of the season.

After EuroVolley, you will go back to PGE Skra and start the next stage of preparation for the new PlusLiga season.

I am sure it will be okay. I will be able to focus on one goal and we will definitely do everything we can to be fully ready for the competition.
