Volleyball Gala cements friendship, cooperation between CEV and Bulgaria
News from the CEV

Sofia, Bulgaria, October 26, 2019. The 2019 edition of the annual European Volleyball Gala held on Friday at Hotel Marinela in Sofia was not only an opportunity to celebrate some of the past and present stars of the sport, but was also testament to the very close and fruitful cooperation established by the CEV with the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation (BVF). Therefore, it was especially befitting that the glamorous event ended with CEV President Aleksandar Boričić presenting BVF President and CEV Board of Administration member Dancho Lazarov with the CEV Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I would like to thank the Bulgarian Federation for their warm hospitality and for hosting our Volleyball family here in Sofia,” the CEV President said, before announcing – much to his colleague’s surprise – that he would present Mr Lazarov with the Lifetime Achievement Award. “This award is a much deserved recognition for the hard work that Mr Lazarov and our Bulgarian friends in Volleyball have done for so many years. Bulgaria have hosted an impressive number of competitions, from top events to age-group championships, and they stand out as one of the most active and hard-working National Federations not only in Europe, but on the global stage as well,” Mr Boričić added.

The European Volleyball Gala was indeed only the last major happening in a long series of events held in Bulgaria after the Balkan country previously played host to the 2015 men’s EuroVolley, the 2018 FIVB Men’s World Championship, Olympic qualifications and much more. “I would like to thank the CEV and their President since this award truly acknowledges our friendship and shows their full trust in us. I will share this recognition with my colleagues from the BVF Board and staff. It comes as a real surprise and I simply cannot find any more words to describe the way I feel right now,” Mr Lazarov added. “I can only say that we will work hard so that we will deliver EuroVolley 2021 Women as professionally as we have done with all previous events, including tonight’s Gala.”

The Gala was a moment to review a truly successful year for Europe’s Volleyball family too. “I believe that with the help of our friends and colleagues from all National Federations, partners and stakeholders we have raised the value of Volleyball to an unprecedented level,” the CEV President emphasised in his address. “However, I believe we can get even better and stronger so that Volleyball becomes one of the top sports in Europe. I have many moments to cherish, such as the historic Champions League Super Finals, where we achieved full equality for men and women, as well as EuroBeachVolley and EuroVolley, with half a million people visiting the matches of our prime competition. We rightfully celebrate our achievements in 2019 but we certainly will not stop here,” Mr Boričić concluded.
