Zenit KAZAN celebrate eighth Russian national cup title
News from the National Federations

Moscow, Russia, December 26, 2019. With as many as 5,500 spectators in attendance, Zenit KAZAN beat Zenit SAINT PETERSBURG 3-0 to claim the Russian national cup crown as the Final Four event hosted by the Volleyball Federation of Russia reached its climax on Thursday in Moscow. This is the eight national cup title for Zenit KAZAN – including two the team from Tatarstan secured under their previous denomination, Dinamo-Tattransgaz KAZAN. It was a truly special day for teams from Kazan, since Dinamo claimed the women’s title earlier on Thursday.

The men’s Final Four featured the teams of Dinamo MOSCOW and Kuzbass KEMEROVO as well, who lost in the semis to Zenit SAINT PETERSBURG and Zenit KAZAN, respectively.

Denis Zemchenok, star player of Zenit KAZAN: “I think that from a technical standpoint, the two teams are quite equal – but today we played better than our opponents did. Moreover, the psychological side played a very important role as well. We came from a series of not so good matches, and we had to redeem ourselves. We went out to fight until the end and realised that there was no way back. The main thing is that we won and enjoyed the game.”

The captain of Zenit KAZAN, Alexander Butko, lifts the trophy of the Russian national cup to start the celebrations with his teammates

Alexey Verbov, head coach of Zenit KAZAN: “The result does not come as a surprise.  I saw the eyes of my players and did not have any doubt about the result of the match. The last few months we have had so many difficulties – for a number of reasons - but today we were able to see a team that fought for the victory until the very end. I want to thank my players. Many thanks to our fans who came to Moscow in large numbers and to the people who filled the sports palace today despite the fact that the home team did not make it to the finals. It was very nice to play in such an atmosphere.”
