Klemen Čebulj and Saša Planinšec best Slovenian Volleyball Players of 2019
News from the National Federations

Ljubljana, Slovenia, January 3, 2020. The Volleyball Federation of Slovenia (OZS) presented earlier this week awards for the best Volleyball players and coaches of 2019. A short ceremony took place during the friendly match featuring the men’s national teams of Slovenia and the Netherlands in Maribor – shortly before they both start their quest for a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics through the qualifying event running in Berlin from January 5 to 10.

As many as 1,556 people cast their vote through the official OZS website www.odbojka.si. These counted together with those of the federation’s Expert Council to determine Klemen Čebulj and Saša Planinšec as the best Slovenian Volleyball players of 2019. For both, this is the first time they receive the award, last year won by Tine Urnaut and Iza Mlakar, respectively. Urnaut finished in second place and Dejan Vinčić third. In the women's category, Mlakar and Eva Mori claimed second and third place, respectively.

“I am very grateful for this award, as this is a reward for all the work that I have done so far and it will be a great encouragement to continue working just as hard,” Planinšec commented. Sister Mihaela Matičić received the prize on her behalf.

“This award means a lot to me. I would like to thank all those who voted for me. I would also like to thank my teammates, without whom this would not be possible. I am already looking forward to another successful summer as the last one was,” Čebulj sounded very excited after receiving the award. He claimed silver at EuroVolley 2019 after helping Slovenia win the FIVB Challenger Cup and with it secure their right to contest the 2020 edition of the Volleyball Nations League.

The Expert Council selected Gregor Rozman (Calcit Volley KAMNIK) as the best coach of women’s teams for 2019, while Matija Pleško (ACH Volley LJUBLJANA) received the award for the best men’s coach of the year.

The President of the Volleyball Federation of Slovenia, Metod Ropret presented the award to the respective winners.
