Coaches Commission to work primarily on education to help grow the game
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, January 13, 2020. On Monday, the members of the European Coaches Commission (ECOC) chaired by Philippe Blain visited the ‘home of European Volleyball’ in Luxembourg for their annual plenary meeting – their last before elections follow later this year when the XLI CEV General Assembly takes place in Moscow on June 19.

After the highly successful premiere in 2019, the ECOC will work closely with the CEV Technical and Development Department for the delivery of the second CEV Coaches Convention. The event – which is due to take place from June 12 to 14 in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia – will be open to attendees from other continental confederations as well, thus cementing the CEV’s leading role on the international stage also in terms of coaches education.

In an effort to grow Volleyball at the entry level, the Coaches Convention will feature theoretical and practical sessions where the speakers will be putting an emphasis on making Volleyball a fun activity for children to enjoy – obviously with the help of their respective coaches and physical education teachers.

In order to make the convention a truly international event, the ECOC have recommended for one of the speakers to come from outside of Europe, while participation will be open to all National Federations, with a larger contingent expected from those countries that have successfully implemented the CEV School Project. The 2019 edition of the CEV Coaches Convention – the first event of this kind ever organised by a Confederation – inspired many in their work with the youngsters and the ECOC members are confident that they can achieve the same success with the help of renowned speakers.

Moreover, the ECOC worked on the next steps of the EU-funded project aimed at strengthening cooperation among European and Asian coaches. The first project involving the CEV and their Asian counterpart, the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), should get underway in the second half of February. It will focus on how cultural differences can emerge when teaching Volleyball, also at the grassroots level, and the different paths that players follow on their way to start and secure a professional career in the sport in Europe and Asia.

With education being one of the areas where the ECOC have focussed their activities, the plans drafted on Monday in Luxembourg include the provision of a video library showing the execution of key technical skills and tactics by star players for coaches to learn from and to share when working with their respective teams.
