ERC hail successful year, step up work to grow next generation of elite referees
News from the CEV

Belgrade, Serbia, February 7, 2020. The members of the European Refereeing Commission (ERC) chaired by Luciano Gaspari travelled earlier this week to Belgrade for their annual plenary meeting, hosted at the CEV President Office in the Serbian capital.

Mr Gaspari reviewed a truly successful year for European Volleyball from a refereeing standpoint, with the ERC vision and wish to involve young, less experienced referees paying dividends. Everything ran smoothly at EuroVolley as well as at the Tokyo Volleyball qualifiers held this past January in Berlin and Apeldoorn, where the appointed referees showed not only their sound and solid technical skills, but also the ability to establish a close, friendly interaction with players and coaches alike.

The quality of European referees is well known and a number of match officials from the continent are due to attend the Tokyo 2020 Olympics later this year. If Europe can count on a number of experienced, highly qualified referees, it is just as important to work on growing the next generation, with ERC Secretary Zorica Bjelic reviewing the technical and social skills of those – 32 – who attended the historic European International Candidate Referee Course held in December of 2019 in Ankara, Turkey.

The ERC discussed a number of proposals as to how they can best grow and develop young, talented referees and agreed on the promotion of two officials to the elite ‘top group’ to replace those who have finished their career due to age limitations.

Ms Oana Sarb, who is responsible for Beach Volleyball refereeing, reviewed the latest updates in this area, where European referees have further cemented their status, with an eye on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where they are likely to play a key role as well. Snow Volleyball refereeing is developing at a fast pace, mainly through the involvement of international Beach Volleyball referees and local ones from countries hosting stops of the rapidly growing European Tour.

Ms Bjelic shared with her colleagues some impressions from the annual seminar for young and talented referees held in October 2019 in Skopje (MKD), which helps strengthen the sense of belonging to one Volleyball family, while growing the enthusiasm and perspectives for those that are still at an early stage of their international careers. As these referees steadily grow their skills, it is important for ERC members and other Referee Delegates to align their evaluation to the same standards, in order to provide consistent and continuous guidance in the process.

Moreover, the ERC praised the work done by the CEV office with the running and development of the online campus, which has become a very useful tool to share knowledge, best practices and ‘refresh’ the understanding of rules, technical items, etc.

While renewing their partnership and close cooperation with the European Medical Commission (EMC) to monitor the health and physical abilities of all match officials, the ERC concluded their meeting by drafting a series of proposals that the CEV Board of Administration will review and discuss later this year.
