Getting creative in time of corona
#PassTheTime

Luxembourg, March 20, 2020.  With almost all of European Volleyball closed down, players from all ranks are trying to pass the time and also stay in shape. Several parents amongst the brightest stars of European Beach, Snow and Volleyball also have to entertain their children in this time of lockdown and social distancing. We present to you the highlight of what the stars of European Volleyball are doing. But first of all, we hope that everyone is safe and healthy. And we urge you all to keep sharing your training and exercises, so everyone in our Volleyball family can join in and stay fit in this time of crisis.

On Thursday evening Earvin Ngapeth, the outside hitter of Zenit KAZAN and the French national team, posted on Instagram that he too had tested positive for the coronavirus (Covid-19). In his post he says that he has endured three difficult days, but he is recovering. He may leave the hospital in a week’s time. He concludes his post with the message: “Stay home, so it doesn’t happen to anyone else.” From all of us at European Volleyball we wish Earvin a speedy recovery.

All athletes are confronted with not being able to train and stay fit in their usual training spot, so adjustments have to be made. One of the most creative players on social media is Ivo Casas, libero of 2020 Champions League contender Benfica LISBOA. He shows what can be done in your own living room. Even with the help of your partner. Austria’s Beach Volleyball player Tobias Winter strapped some water bottles to a cross bar and created his own barbell weight. This is the time to make the most of limited space and resources.

Not only partners help our stars in working out and getting through the day. Many volleyball players have children and they are a welcome addition to any type of pastime. Sir Sicoma Monini PERUGIA superstar Wilfredo Leon Venero has picked up a tennisracket with his daughter and 2018 European Beach Volleyball champion Sanne Keizer is joined in practice by her adorable twins. Beach Volleyball colleague Liliana Fernández Steiner takes it a step further, she is literally training with her baby boy.

Not being able to move about like normal is also leading to some frustration. Beach Volleyball player Alex Ranghieri has found a solution during quarantine: he vents his frustration on his punching bag.

And with all of Europe not being able to play volleyball the way we used to, some national federations and national (youth) teams have taken it upon themselves to create training videos. To show what you can do at home, in the yard and out on the street (if that’s still an option in your country). Or how to just pass the time, because we have a lot of it on our hands.

Stay fit, stay safe and stay at home. Practice social distancing to keep those around you safe.
