Slovakia, Spain, France and Bulgaria qualified to the European Championships
2009 Senior European Championships - 2nd Qualification Round

Luxembourg, 9th June 2008. During this week-end, after winning the 2nd round of the pool A, C, D and E of the women’s competition, four teams qualified to the European Championships 2009. The teams of the pool B as well as the pool F will have to compete on 13-15th June 2008 in Ostrava (CZE) and Giannitsa (GRE) to secure they tickets to the European Championships 2009 in Poland.

In pool A, the Slovak ended the qualification tournament in Kakanj (BIH) with a fifth victory in the pool, beating BIH in a straight three sets. The Ukrainian team after three victories in a row finished second just behind SVK, due to an unfavorable sets ratio. UKR will have to play the 3rd round and dispute its chance against the Croatian team, second of the pool E.

In pool C organized in Caceres (ESP), Spain after beating Romania 3-2 in day 3 of the competition qualified and Azerbaijan finished in the second position and will have to play the 3rd round in September.

“I am very proud of my players and of the way we won the tournament; I have no words to express how happy I am”, said Spanish head coach Guido Vermeulen, who analyzed the match and gave player Lucia Paraja all the credit. “Lucia Paraja changed the course of the game and her performance in the fifth set was decisive; it was a very difficult match for us because we finished very late yesterday, after the five-setter game against Azerbaijan, but we could recover and play at our best here today”.

Spanish captain, Patricia Aranda said: “Our goal was to be focused and to keep our best level. This was the toughest group of the entire qualification tournament but we have been able to maintain the dream to be in the European championship throughout the two rounds and now we can proudly say that we will be in Poland in 2009”.

In pool D disputed in Nancy (FRA), France wins his 6th match in a row and qualified for the 2009 European Championships. After the last game versus Belarus, Fabrice Vial declared: "we really intended to finish this tournament without losing a game. This team is really building itself, there's a great solidarity, it's a real group now and we are very happy to be qualified in Poland.

In pool E organized in Grabovo (BUL), the home team did not offer any chances to its opponent and win also all matches in the tournament. Dragan Neshich, the Bulgaria’s coach stated: “I’m happy to win 6 matches from 6…that is very important that Bulgaria goes in Poland.”

A third and last intermediate round will be staged next September in order to define the line-ups which will get the last three available tickets to travel to Poland. There will be home and away matches which will derive from the results achieved during the 2nd Qualification Round:
