HYPO NOE Champions Cup continues in Graz with more high-level action
News from the National Federations

Salzburg, Austria, June 27, 2020. The second day of competition for the much-anticipated HYPO NOE Beach Volleyball Champions Cup preliminary round held at the Salzburg-Rif Olympic Centre was just as exciting as the opening matches played at the Klagenfurt Sports Park the day before. Katharina Almer / Stephanie Wiesmeyr (pictured) and Maximilian Trummer / Felix Friedl secured first place on Saturday in midsummer conditions.

The preliminary round of the invitational event, which marks the end of the coronavirus-related tournament break for the best Beach Volleyball players in Austria, will end on Sunday in the MaXX Sports Centre in Vienna.

Third-seeded Almer / Wiesmeyr were in a class of their own at the second Champions Cup stop, winning all of their three games in two sets. Eva Freiberger / Viktoria Fink (5) claimed second place with two wins to their name. “I think it has never been as hot in Austria this time of the year as it is today, but we fought our way through anyway. The last game in particular was a cool fight. It is the first tournament with Kathi, it was good for me, since we have found the right chemistry. I am really looking forward to the coming weekend,” said Wiesmeyr with satisfaction.

Anna Mayr / Birgit Schöttl (9) secured a spot in the intermediate round as well. They finished third thanks to a 2-1 victory over Viktoria Mair / Jenny Rödl (8). Because of the better set and game point ratio, they are ahead of the third-placed wildcard team Lucia Aichholzer / Magdalena Rabitsch from the pool held in Klagenfurt.

In the men’s competition, five out of six duels went the full distance. In the last two games, the athletes were already fatigued by the intense heat, but still fought until the end. At the end of the day, Maximilian Trummer / Felix Friedl (7) and Lorenz Petutschnig / Florian Schnetzer (8) had two wins and five points, so they qualified for the next round. “It felt incredibly good to play Beach Volleyball again. The group was really strong. The results also show that. We are of course very happy that we were able to win here,” said Friedl after finishing in first place. Partner Trummer added: “All games were extremely tight, the conditions made it even more difficult. In the end you ran out of breath, but today we had a bit of luck on our side!”

Tobias Winter / Julian Hörl (5) lost in the final duel of the day to Moritz Kindl / Mathias Seiser (6) in three sets, but they also made it into the top 8 as the best third so far. “It is not what we expected, but we are further. That is what really matters. A good horse only jumps as high as it has to,” joked a relieved Tobias Winter.

Kindl, who will be only a spectator with partner Seiser next week: “Great organisation, great courts, we had a really nice day here in Salzburg, even though it was a bit hot. We are very happy that competition finally resumed, even though we did not perform that good, especially in the first two games. In the last match we found back to our rhythm.”

A very interested observer on the site was ÖVV President Gernot Leitner, who was unanimously confirmed in office on Saturday in Salzburg for another two years. “A great setup, the hottest day of the year, a really great HYPO NOE Beach Volleyball Champions Cup stop with exciting matches. Everything is literally crying out for a pro tour event here in the future,” said Leitner, pleased about the smooth running of the competition. And how does it go on? “Tomorrow we have the last preliminary round tournament in Vienna, next weekend the intermediate round will be open for the first time to spectators at Mur-Beach Graz and on the spusuSPORTinsel Wien. A really cool thing!”
