Behrens/Tillmann - Cinderella story at EuroBeachVolley
CEV EuroBeachVolley 2020

German teams were definitely among the favourites to this year’s title, however rather not many people expected that it will be Kim Behrens  and Cinja Tillmann playing in the grand final of the EuroBeachVolley 2020. This young duo shine bright on courts in Jurmala and with no doubts they are one of the biggest surprises of the women’s competition in Latvia. On their way to the gold medal match they eliminated in Round 2 one of the top contenders - Swiss duo Hüberli/Betschart seeded with no. 1 and then in the semifinal they earned convincing victory over Makroguzova/Kholomina from Russia (no. 4).

“It's the second European Championship for us as a team, last time we were 9th and now we are in the final - it's crazy! This is an awesome experience. We know that we can present a good level when we are playing our best, but to prove it now in every game, it's really amazing - also for our constancy and entire process. We are just happy, we will go full in tomorrow’s final and we will see what's going to happen,” said Kim Behrens after winning semifinal game.

Considering their current ranking in Germany they didn’t expect a chance to compete at EuroBeachVolley in Jurmala. “We were not in the tournament at all, because we are only team no. 5 of Germany. The first and second teams were out because of injuries, so we found out that we are allowed to play only one week before and we came here without any expectations. We just want to play and have a good last tournament of the year,” explained Cinja Tillmann.

The beginning of the tournament was far away from their latest performances, in the opening game they were defeated by the lower-ranked duo Amaranta/Lobato (ESP). “We are very surprised that we make such a good tournament after a very miserable start as we lost our first group match and now we win every game. We are very happy about it.,” added 29-year-old Tillmann.

Behren and Tillmann joined forces in March 2019. Observing their cheerful reactions on court and the way how they motivate each other, everyone can say that it was a right choice. “We are fighting together until the end against everyone”, they both admit. As they both agree, their great performance is a result of hard work with their coach. “Our coach is very focus on improving our technique and skills in hitting and service, and this works,” said Behrens.

In the EuroBeachVolley gold medal match they will face Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré. Will they become the 8th German women’s team crowned the European champion? The game starts at 3 PM (CET) and will be streamed live on EuroVolley.TV .
