Calcit only two sets away from reaching #CEVChallengeCupM 8th Finals
CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2021

Kamnik, Slovenia, November 18, 2020. In the first of two consecutive matches scheduled for the 16th Finals of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2021, Calcit Volley KAMNIK stormed to a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-15, 25-17) over OK Vardar SKOPJE of North Macedonia. The result is especially remarkable since the home team could not count on three of their starting players. OK Vardar SKOPJE, on the other hand, travelled to Slovenia with a roster of nine players only.

Calcit Volley set the tone of their supremacy right from the first set, leaving only 12 points to Vardar. Miha Bregar and Diko Purič combined to score five blocks, as Jan Brulec’s accounted for a flying start for the home side, paving the way towards an early 8-1 lead.

Vardar were able to keep the score close until 7-7 in the second set before Calcit scored three points in a row. After that, Calcit Volley were clearly the dominant force and with a 7-1 break in their favour they moved the score to 21-14 before securing a 25-15 set win.

The hosts set the pace of the game in the third set as well (4-1, 9-5) but OK Vardar responded to cut their deficit down to two points only (13-11). After that, Calcit Volley rose to the occasion and eventually closed the match in three quick sets.

Calcit Volley KAMNIK were obviously the better team on Tuesday night, as Miha Bregar top scored for the home side with 12 points, one more than those scored by Jovica Simovski of OK Vardar SKOPJE. Jan Brulec registered as many as six aces for the hosts.

Sašo Štalekar, middle blocker of Calcit Volley KAMNIK: “The game ended quickly. We did not have much information on the visiting team, but we entered the game without underestimating the opponent. We were able to give our younger players a chance to play. The game was, to be honest, a one-way traffic. We served well, blocked well, got some nice balls from the defence and this made our job much easier. We won today, and we will try to repeat this tomorrow, and move on to the 8th Finals.”

The re-match will be taking place on Wednesday evening in Kamnik as well.
