FIRST ROUND COMPLETED

Luxembourg, May 22, 2006. Four men’s teams and one women’s team have qualified for the second round of the European Championship 2006/07 after the first round of home & away matches has been completed on Sunday, 21st May 2006.

Azerbaijan, Latvia, Norway and Sweden are the four teams which have qualified for the second round of the men’s European Championship 2006/07. The two Scandinavian teams of Norway and Sweden claimed two straight set victories, at home as well as away, against Luxembourg respectively Georgia. Azerbaijan and Latvia faced tougher resistance. The team from the Far East of Europe beat Austria 3:1 at home, but lost the second encounter in a tiebreak. Still, thanks to the higher set ratio the Azerbaijanis went through. In the match between Latvia and Moldavia the points ratio had to decide at the end. Although the higher ranked Latvians lost the first match in Moldavia 1:3, they secured the return match with the same score, finally accumulating seven points more than their opponents from Moldavia. “The first set proved that we didn’t lose to Moldavia by chance as they played strong volleyball”, stated the Latvian head coach Jurijs Deveikus, “My players were very nervous during the first set but they tried their best until the end of the match with the will to fight for each point.” Aleksandr Dudicov, Moldavia’s head coach, reckoned that his players were too laid back in general.

In the women’s competition only one first round took place, namely between Israel and Norway. After the Norwegians won the first set away in Israel, they lost the following three sets away, as well as the three sets at home, so that the Israelis moved on to the second round.

The second round of the men’s and women’s European Championship 2006/07 with 24 teams each is divided into six pools of four teams each.
The winners of the six pools in the second round automatically qualify for the Final Round, whilst the second ranked teams of each pool go into a third round. In this third round the six teams play home and away matches in order to determine the three winning teams to join the Final Round. The Final Round consists of 16 teams, namely the seven already qualified teams as well as the six winners of the six pools in the second round and the three winners of the third round.
The men’s Final Round of the Indesit European Championship 2006/07 will be held in Moscow and St. Petersburg (RUS) from 6-16 September 2007, whilst the women’s Final Round will start off in the Belgian cities of Charleroi and Hasselt on 20 September 2007 before Luxembourg will host the Final Four on the weekend of 29-30 September 2007.
