Battipaglia welcomes Europe’s rising stars as #EuroBeachVolleyU20 gets underway

The 2026 CEV U20 Beach Volleyball European Championship officially got underway on Thursday at Lido Riviera Spineta in Battipaglia, where Europe’s most promising young players took to the sand to begin their quest for the continental titles. Following the qualifying rounds, the Main Draw has now brought together 32 pairs per gender, divided into eight pools of four teams each, thus setting the stage for an intense competition that will continue through to the finals on Sunday, September 6.

The opening day marked the beginning of the decisive phase of the championship, with teams from across Europe facing their first tests in pool play and looking to secure their place in the knockout stages. More than simply a youth competition, the CEV U20 European Championship represents an important milestone in the development of Europe’s next generation of Beach Volleyball players. Competing at international level allows young athletes to measure themselves against different styles of play, Beach Volleyball traditions and opponents they would rarely encounter in their domestic competitions, thereby gaining valuable experience as they take their first steps towards the senior game. The pool phase will continue over the coming days, with every match contributing to the final picture ahead of the knockout rounds, where the European titles will ultimately be decided.

The international scope of the championship also highlights the different backgrounds and development pathways represented in Battipaglia. For some National Federations, the opportunity to compete regularly on the international Beach Volleyball circuit is an essential part of their players’ growth.

“They are young, but they are ready. The important thing is that they grow and that this experience benefits their future and their development,” explained Italian Beach Volleyball National Teams Coordinator Luigi Dell’Anna, underlining the importance of international competitions in helping young players build confidence, experience and awareness of what is required at the highest levels.

Dell’Anna, who has known the Battipaglia venue for many years, also considers Lido Riviera Spineta an ideal setting for a championship of this calibre, providing an established Beach Volleyball environment for a competition that brings together young athletes from across the continent.

The importance of the event is particularly evident for countries where opportunities to train and compete regularly in Beach Volleyball are more limited. This is the case for Iceland, represented in Battipaglia by one pair in the men’s tournament and another in the women’s. “It is difficult for us to train regularly in Beach Volleyball, so we are very happy and proud to be here,” said Icelandic head coach Pedro Dupuy. “The level is very, very high and competitive. We want to perform as well as possible, and these events are a great opportunity to do so and to test ourselves against this level of competition.”

His words reflect one of the fundamental values of the CEV U20 European Championship: creating an international environment in which young athletes from very different sporting backgrounds can compete, learn from one another and gain experience that may prove crucial in their future careers. With the first day of Main Draw action now completed, the eight men’s pools and eight women’s pools will continue to shape the tournament over the coming days, determining which teams will advance to the knockout stage and remain in contention for the European medals.

For the young players competing in Battipaglia, however, every match represents more than just another result. It is another opportunity to compete, learn and take a further step in their development on the international stage. The road to the U20 European titles has only just begun.
