The 2025 edition of the MEVZA Beach Volleyball Club Championship concluded on Sunday in Bratislava, with Slovenia’s BVC Ludus LJUBLJANA claiming the women’s title and Beachclub Strahov PRAHA of Czechia securing victory in the men’s competition. The final competition day in Slovakia’s capital city delivered intense matches and thrilling Golden Set deciders in both categories. With this success, Ludus and Beachclub Strahov have also secured their participation in the preliminary phase of the CEV Beach Volley European Cup 2025 scheduled for later this year.
The event in Bratislava featured 10 women’s and 12 men’s clubs from five National Federations and a total of 13 clubs across the two genders.
Women’s Tournament
The women’s competition witnessed a dramatic final, where BVC Ludus LJUBLJANA from Slovenia emerged victorious against Hungary’s EDRA after a tense Golden Set battle.
In the semi-finals, BVC Ludus faced Beach Sport (HUN) in a gripping contest. The Slovenian side dominated the first match (21-10, 21-12), but Beach Sport fought back in the second match (21-13, 21-16) to force a Golden Set. However, Ludus proved their resilience, securing a 21-14 win to advance to the final. The other semifinal saw EDRA taking on the home team, BVC BRATISLAVA 1. EDRA claimed victory in two hard-fought matches (2-1 in both), thereby booking their place in the final.
The bronze medal match pitted Beach Sport against BVC BRATISLAVA 1, with the Slovakian team clinching third place after recording two victories (2-1, 2-0). In the grand finale, BVC Ludus took the first match comfortably (21-14, 21-18), but EDRA fought back with a 21-14, 21-18 win in the second. The championship was ultimately decided in a nerve-wracking Golden Set, where the Slovenian side triumphed 27-25 to claim the title.
Men’s Tournament
The men’s final featured Beachclub Strahov and BVC BRATISLAVA 1, delivering yet another Golden Set decider.
In the semi-finals, Beachclub Strahov faced BVC Ludus. The Czech team won both matches (2-1, 2-0), securing their place in the final. The second semifinal was a thrilling contest between Beach Service Club z.s. A (CZE) and BVC BRATISLAVA 1. Each team won one match (2-0, 0-2), leading to a decisive Golden Set, where BVC BRATISLAVA 1 prevailed 21-12.
The bronze medal match saw BVC Ludus LJUBLJANA take on Beach Service Club z.s. A. Both matches were closely contested, with Beach Service Club z.s. A securing the win after two hard-fought encounters (2-1, 2-1). In the final, Beachclub Strahov won the first match (21-19, 21-10), but BVC BRATISLAVA 1 responded with a strong performance in the second (24-22, 21-15). The championship boiled down to a Golden Set, where Beachclub Strahov ultimately clinched the title.
“After a long break from competitive matches, the girls rediscovered the thrill of tournament play and did so in style. They won all four of their group-stage matches and topped the standings. Despite one setback in the knockout rounds, they bounced back with two strong victories to secure third place,” said BVC BRATISLAVA coach Martin Suja. “I was pleased with the performances across the team. The reigning Slovak champions, Eva Nemec-Eleková and Andrea Bundzelová, showcased their experience, while the newly formed duo Barbora Tokošová and Martina Tereňová made clear strides in their development. The tournament also exposed areas we need to work on, but overall, I am very satisfied with the girls’ performance. A huge thanks to Beach Club Draždiak for hosting an event of such high quality.”
BVC BRATISLAVA second women’s team showed promise throughout the tournament. “We started strong, winning three group-stage matches and losing just one in a tiebreak. Beating Austria’s Bergstrand team twice and then overcoming Hungary’s representatives was a great achievement. The narrow loss to Hungarian side Beach Sport cost us a better playoff draw, and we had to face the world-class Slovenians from BVC Ludus LJUBLJANA,” commented coach Michaela Cibulová. “The semi-final spot was decided in a Golden Set, where we put up a solid fight. But facing such high-calibre opponents is exactly why we organise these tournaments. In the classification match, we dominated Austria’s Bergstrand 2 and finished fifth overall. I see our performance as positive, and these matches are crucial for our players’ development.”
