The very first, historic Beach Pro Tour Futures event held in the southern Italian region of Calabria and more specifically in Cirò Marina started on Thursday under hot, sunny and at the same time windy conditions with the qualification round.

The women’s matches were extremely competitive, with Canada’s Anna Feore/Anna Licht, USA’s Madelyne Anderson/Molly Turner, New Zealand’s Jasmine Pepi-Milton/Olivia MacDonald and Vanuatu’s Miller Elwin/Sherysyn Toko – winner of a Futures event last week in Lecce – all securing their spot in the Main Draw.

The men’s teams fighting for a spot in the Main Draw delighted the audience in Cirò Marina from the early hours showing spectacular rallies and classy defence actions in the thin sand of the wonderful Calabrian beach. Four strong teams worked hard to qualify for Friday’s matches after surviving dramatic fixtures. Hungary’s Artur Hajòs/Bence Attila Stréli, Czech Republic’s Frantisek Knobloch/Lukas Kittel, Austria’s Paul Pascariuc/Laurenz Leitner and France’s Liam Patte/Timothée Platre made it to the Main Draw – the latter ones after edging home favourites Manuel Alfieri/Mauro Sacripanti. Sweden’s Martin Appelgren/Alexander Herrmann have reached the Main Draw as well as ‘lucky losers’ following a withdrawal.

The competition resumes on Friday with the first women’s matches starting at 08:30 am, with the men following next at noon.
