The Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Futures event in Madrid seemed destined to end with a big party to celebrate the victory of home heroes Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira, but Swiss Quentin Métral and Yves Haussener had different plans.

Teams from Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands stand at the podium in Madrid

The 27-year-old Métral and the 23-year-old Haussener recovered from an emphatic first-set defeat to come back and prevail against the Spanish veterans in the tie-breaker (11-21, 27-25, 15-13) and take the title at the Puerta de Hierro Beach Volleyball centre in the Spanish capital.

Métral and Haussener became the champions of the first of 21 Futures scheduled to take place in Europe until the end of the year. These events are run by the CEV in close cooperation with Volleyball World and provide teams from the continent with several opportunities to compete and gain valuable ranking points. The Swiss earned 400 points and the prize money of 1,000 euros for their victory.

“This was an unbelievable match. We had a terrible start, were trailing 7-0 in the first set and they were playing very well. We slowly got into the match and we’re so happy that it went our way.”

Dutchmen Matthew Immers and Mart van Werkhoven completed the podium in Madrid as they claimed the bronze medals after they topped Slovenians Jan Pokersnik and Nejc Zemljak in three sets (21-15, 17-21, 15-11).

The Beach Pro Tour remains in Madrid for a few more days as now the women are set to compete at the Puerta de Hierro Beach Volleyball centre next week, from Thursday to Sunday.
