Sand Kings of Budapest: Latvia seize historic first Nations Cup Crown

Latvia seized their first-ever title at the CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup after an intense day of battles on the Budapest sand. The Latvian men first took care of business in the semi-finals against Italy, setting up a gold medal showdown where they left absolutely no room for doubt. Triumphing in dominant fashion over Norway, who were unable to defend their 2025 continental crown, Latvia captured the prestigious trophy for the first time in their nation's history.

Final: Norway 0-2 Latvia 

Latvia put one foot on the top step of the podium early in the Big Finale as Edgars Točs and Gustavs Auziņš delivered a clinical opening statement against Norway's Nils Ringøen and Even Stray Aas. The Latvian duo completely dictated the tempo from the sand, showcasing great defensive coordination and finding sharp angles to keep the Norwegians firmly on the back foot. Refusing to let up on the pressure in either frame, Točs and Auziņš cruised through the opening matchup with matching, dominant scorelines, winning 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) to give Latvia a vital 1-0 advantage in the gold medal tie.

With the ultimate prize hanging in the balance, the final matchup saw Latvia’s powerhouse duo of Mārtiņš Pļaviņš and Kristians Fokerots square off against Norway's Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen. Although the Norwegians fought hard and had their chances to shift the momentum, the Latvians completely dictated the tempo when it mattered most. Showcasing elite composure, Pļaviņš and Fokerots prevailed in straight sets, 21-12, 21-16, to seal a flawless team victory and officially capture the 2026 CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup crown.

Semi-finals battles 

Earlier in the day, fans packed into the spectacular City Park venue to witness an array of high-class semi-final matchups. The electric atmosphere in Budapest set the perfect tone for a day of elite continental beach volleyball, as Europe's top teams delivered intense, edge-of-your-seat battles for a coveted spot in the big finale.

Norway stopped Italy in the semi-finals (2-0)

In a gripping semifinal clash, Norway punched their ticket to the gold medal match as they secured a hard-fought 2-0 tie victory over a resilient Italian squad. The tone was set in a marathon opening matchup, where Nils Ringøen and Even Stray Aas showed incredible mental toughness to outlast Davide Borraccino and Marco Viscovich in a dramatic three-set thriller (21-23, 22-20, 17-15), bouncing back after dropping a tight first set. With the momentum in Norway's favour, Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen delivered under pressure in the second matchup, sealing the tie with a clutch 2-1 victory (21-17, 17-21, 15-12) over Samuele Cottafava and Gianluca Dal Corso. The sweep successfully eliminated Italy and propelled the powerhouse Norwegian men into the Final.

Latvia swept into the Final after outclassing the Netherlands (2-0)

Edgars Točs and Gustavs Auziņš sealed a crucial opening victory for Team Latvia, digging deep in the final minutes of an increasingly intense battle against Tom Sonneville and Quinten Groenewold to close it out in straight sets, 2-0 (21-18, 21-19). Showing immense strength under pressure, Točs and Auziņš refused to let the momentum shift.

The ultimate clash of titans came immediately afterwards. The 2024 EuroBeachVolley champions, Martins Pļaviņš and Kristians Fokerots, put on a masterclass against the formidable Dutch duo of Stefan Boermans and Alexander Brouwer. Winning in absolute style with a commanding 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) performance, they officially punched Latvia's ticket to the gold medal match. 

Latvia’s Road to the Gold 

Latvia’s clinical road to the final began on home sand in Riga, where they dominated Pool C against Denmark, Slovenia, and Croatia to punch their direct ticket to Budapest. Once in the Finals, they successfully navigated a heavyweight Pool A to advance into the single-elimination bracket, where they first silenced the passionate home crowd by knocking out hosts Hungary in the quarter-finals. The Latvian squad then put on a masterclass in efficiency in the semi-finals to sweep the Netherlands 2-0 overall without needing a Golden Set; Edgars Točs and Gustavs Auziņš fought through a gritty opening match to win 21-18, 21-19, before 2024 EuroBeachVolley champions Mārtiņš Pļaviņš and Kristians Fokerots sealed the gold medal ticket with a stylish 21-17, 21-17 victory over Boermans and Brouwer. 

The Crowning Moment: The Award Ceremony

The atmospheric centerpiece of the City Park set the perfect stage as the athletes of both the Men's and Women's tournaments gathered on the podium to officially conclude a spectacular four days of competition. Following the hard-fought final matches, the newly crowned champions and medallists took part in the formal award ceremony to lift their respective team trophies and celebrate their continental achievements.

Stepping up to present the honours and recognise the tremendous depth of talent showcased in Budapest was a distinguished delegation of sports leadership, including CEV President Roko Sikirić, International Olympic Committee member and the event's chief patron Balázs Fürjes, and Hungarian Volleyball Federation President Gabriella Vatai. Joining them to hand out the medals were CEV Board Member Arturs Vitkovskis, Middle European Volleyball Zonal Association President Valentina Bifflin, and European Beach Volleyball Commission President Tomislav Šmuc, highlighting the immense prestige of the Nations Cup format and capping off a momentous day for European Beach Volleyball.
