Stunning 31 Blocks in a Single Match for Lokomotiv Kaliningrad

A weekend of unprecedented block performance in Russia while Vakifbank Istanbul took the lead in Turkey's domestic league.

 

Russia's CEV Champions League Volley participant Lokomotiv Kaliningrad Region hosted Leningradka Saint Petersburg in the eighth round of the Russian Superleague. Even though Leningradka took a 2-0 lead in the sets, Kaliningrad made a particular comeback and won the clash after the tie-break (3-2: 23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-9)

Kaliningrad, as a team, highlighted with their block performance: The hosts made exactly 31 blocks in this single match. Russian middle-blocker Ekaterina Evdokimova showed an outstanding performance in front of the net with 11 blocks, while Polish opposite Malwina Smarzek, the top scorer of the match with 22 points, set up seven blocks.

 

In Turkey, the most anticipated encounter of this week was played on Monday: The CEV Cup representative Eczacibasi Dynavit defeated CEV Champions League Volley squad Fenerbahce Opet Istanbul in the eleventh round of the Turkish Sultans League after a battle lasting about 2 hours and 20 minutes (3-2: 16-25, 25-17, 25-21, 17-25, 16-14) and got their ninth victory in the league.

Tijana Boskovic led her team for this huge win: Including five blocks and three aces, the Serbian star tallied 31 points. Russian promising outside hitter Arina Fedorovtseva took 17 points, which was insufficient for Fenerbahce to remain on top of the leaderboard.

 

By this result, the last SuperFinalist VakifBank Istanbul, which beat the PTT with 3-0 this weekend, became the leader of the overall standings, while Eczacibasi rose to the second place.

In Italy, the defending CEV Champions League Volley champion A. Carraro Imoco Volley Conegliano defeated Challenge Cup team Savino Del Bene Scandicci by 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-21) while Igor Gorgonzola Novara overpowered CEV Cup team Unet e-work Busto Arsizio 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 11-25, 25-23, 15-13) in the ninth round of the Italian Superleague.

 

Poland's CEV Champions League Volley teams Grupa Azoty Chemik Police and Developres SkyRes Rzeszow also won their challenges this week and maintained their first and second places on the charts.
