A golden pipeline: how Czech Volleyball is building a culture of believing

When Czechia steps onto the court for the upcoming EuroVolley Men tournament, they do so not merely as ambitious underdogs looking to make noise in Pool A against powerhouses like Italy and Slovenia. They arrive supported by a rising tide within their national pipeline - a structural shift that is actively transforming potential into results.

Building on an impressive run in recent international campaigns, including a semi-final in last year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, the Czech programme is no longer content with sporadic success. The ambition is systemic, rooted in a seamless transition from elite youth development to top-tier senior performance.

The foundation: Gold on the horizon

Proof of that systemic rise came this summer when the Czech U22 team stormed through the European Championship, taking down continental giants like Poland and Italy en route to a historic gold medal.

For U22 head coach Michal Nekola, that championship run was not down to magic or luck, but a reflection of a clear, disciplined philosophy that permeates the entire federation.

"There is no special secret," Nekola reflects on the mental fortitude his squad showed against Europe's traditional elites.

That belief is the product of continuous, year-round investment in the country’s modern developmental model. Rather than treating youth categories as isolated tournament cycles, the Czech programme views them as a single, uninterrupted pathway designed to supply the senior team with battle-tested talent.

"I think we are doing a good job not only in the youngest category, where players get the best basics, but also in the following categories, where we work continuously throughout the year," Nekola explains. "This is the way we have a chance to find players who will be able to join the 'A' men's team. The last few years have confirmed the correctness of this path."

The bridge: bringing young blood to the Big Stage

That developmental pathway is already yielding real-time results for senior head coach Jiří Novák. As his squad prepares for intense Pool A action in #EuroVolleyM, four members of Nekola’s gold-medal U22 squad have stepped directly into the senior team's EuroVolley preparation.

Novák acknowledges the immediate value these young champions bring to the locker room, while maintaining a practical view of the step-up in competition.

"We have four players from this team in preparation for senior Euro," Novák notes. "These players have a winning mentality and an excellent working approach. On the other hand, we know that there is a big difference between junior and senior Volleyball."

Bridging that gap requires focus and pragmatism. Facing a group that features heavyweight opponents like Italy and Slovenia in Modena, Novák is keeping his team firmly anchored in the present. The immediate objective is clear: navigate the crucial opening fixtures against familiar opposition like Greece and Sweden to secure safe passage to the knockout stages.

"First of all, we must focus on the first three group matches to battle for qualification for the next round," Novák says. "We have some experience with teams like Greece and Sweden from previous editions of the European League, and we know their quality. Beyond tactical game plans, my message will be clear: fight as a team, all together."

Once through, the dark-horse Czechs are eager to test themselves against the world's elite.

The destination: A sustainable future

Whether looking at Nekola’s rising champions or Novák’s senior battle group, the overarching direction of Czech Volleyball is pointing toward the elite tier. The programme’s ultimate horizon isn't just about snatching individual wins, but cementing a permanent place among the sport’s top tier.
